Nomadic Van Life: Modern-Day Henry Thoreau

10 Tips for Living Your Best Life!

Your Best Life might differ from mine — but here’s the perks I enjoy living my best life, living in a van full-time.

1/ Free time

There is not enough free time to go around, or it seems. To reclaim my free time, I gave up 75% of my physical possessions.

I no longer have to house 75% of things, I don’t use but pay to house. It’s pretty silly to house things - when you don’t remember what they even are.

When I first moved into my van, I was paying $200 plus dollars for a two room indoor storage. I now pay $65 for a small storage not much bigger than a closet!

The more stuff you have the more money you need, to take care of it. With abundance comes clutter. Clutter is a time suck and a drain.

2/Extra $$$

Since I live in a van, the bulk of my money is no longer gobbled up by living accommodations. I live rent “MF” Free.

I occasionally pay for a campground or some other kind of seasonal living accommodations, but it pales in comparison to a hefty rent.

I pay less than $10 for electricity. Let me explain. I pay about $9 for a subscription to a chain coffee shop, from where I can get unlimited coffee and beverages. The subscription allows me to sit there in the coffee shop and use their electricity and internet.

I occasionally buy lunch from the shop, because, hey, a lady has to eat!

3/ Peace of Mind

I spend a lot of time living in parks and outdoors, being with nature. And I swear nothing brings you more peace than the earth being your living room and Nature being your TV set.

4/Convenience

The freedom that I enjoy because of my lifestyle, allows me to do things during off peak times. I am able to go to places like grocery stores, coffee shops, gyms before or after the crowds.

5/ No More Fri-Yay jokes

When I worked a traditional job, we joked on Fridays that, it was Friyay! Friyay, gave us a reprieve from the work for at least 2 days. We could go out to happy hour after work, and also sleep in on Saturday with no alarm clock. Although Sunday meant we returned back to the grind of prepping for work, Friyay made the dreaded Monday morning a little better!

I’m so glad, I no longer have to hear or tell Friyay joke.

5/ No alarm clock

I wake up to birds chirping. Author Maya Angelou wrote, “I know why the caged bird sings”, I know why a bird chirps — that’s the freedom! Nature is my alarm clock and it’s all natural and good for me.

6/ No politics or religion

You can’t escape politics because, every single thing you do is tied to it, but for me, it’s not. I will not have meaningless conversations with you, during which you won’t convince or insult me or vice versa. My politics is my business and same to you.

Granted, you can have freedom from political or religious conversations whether or not you live in a van, but since I live in a van and I’m even more determined to protect my peace, I make sure not to intake those conversations.

8/Better Self Care

I have ample time to do things that are key to my self-care. It includes walking and journaling among other things.

9/Freedom to disassociate

If my neighbors are jerks, I drive away from them! My home on wheels allows me to do that.

The biggest perk that I get, is to create and be uniquely me. Being creative also fuels my self-care.

I have listed the “perks of living a simple lifestyle”. Can I make a big list of disadvantages, you bet. But for me, as of now the perks outweigh them. While living a nontraditional lifestyle, I have more time to fix the things that don’t work.

This is my Joy Route (Living my Best life) and I’m sticking to it.
