Nocturnal Metamorphosis

Last night, I dreamt I was a boat With a mermaid tail, scales afloat On ocean blue Hokusai-painted waves, gently rolling through time and space.

Not sure where I was going, Or if it even mattered at all. As I drifted by, rolling with the breeze, My breasts enlarged, nipples grew hard, Increasingly expanding, almost acting As a beacon of light in the darkness of my dream.

And there, I knew peace And gained wisdom and understanding. I saw colors change and realized I had changed too. We all do in one way or another, Embrace the impermanence of life.

Collage art from my dream journal. The dream that inspired the poem.

Rachel K.

A few months ago, I became intensely focused on having a lucid dream. I delved deep into various lucid dreaming books, incorporated reality checks into my routine, experimented with deep meditations and relaxation techniques, and began the practice of keeping a dream journal.

Initially, my dream journal remained dormant, as night after night left me waking up disappointed. Instead of vivid exciting dreams to capture, my recollections often consisted of falling into a deep black darkness.

Then one night, I lay down without consciously contemplating lucidity. Suddenly, I found myself perceiving the world around me as if I were in a cartoon, and the realization dawned on me that I must be dreaming. The experience was incredibly exhilarating— observing myself transformed into this fantastical creature, surrounded by water, a beautiful expansive sky, and an overwhelming sense of fearlessness and freedom. The excitement was so intense that it jolted me out of my dream.

Quickly, I rushed down the hall to document the vision and hastily sketched it, later bringing it to life with paint and collage material, as shown in the picture above.

Without giving too many details, my physical body seemed to mirror my dream body in some fascinating ways. This was undeniably an unforgettable experience. Although it hasn’t reoccurred, yet, I hold on to the hope that one day I will return and remain calm enough to savor the dream for a while before leaving.
