Summary

Destiny S. Harris discusses the importance of focusing on the message rather than perfection in writing, embracing the evolution of language, and the creative freedom to bend grammar rules for effective communication.

Abstract

In a thoughtful piece directed at fellow writers, Destiny S. Harris argues that the essence of writing lies in conveying meaningful content to readers, rather than adhering strictly to grammar rules. Recognizing that frequent publishing may lead to errors, Harris emphasizes that the occasional mistake should not overshadow the primary goal of successful communication. She points out that language is constantly evolving, with new words being created, suggesting that writers should feel empowered to innovate with grammar to express their ideas more vividly. Harris encourages writers to embrace a write-edit-publish-repeat cycle, advocating for the sharing of work rather than getting stuck in perpetual drafting due to the pursuit of error-free writing.

Opinions

  • Grammar rules should not stifle a writer's creativity or prevent them from sharing their work.
  • The occasional error in writing is acceptable and should not be a significant concern.
  • Writing is about effectively communicating ideas, not about being perfect.
  • Writers should be open to creating and following their own grammar rules to enhance their storytelling.
  • Overemphasis on grammatical precision can hinder the publication process, keeping valuable content from being shared.
  • Language is dynamic, and writers contribute to its evolution by introducing new words and grammar practices.

Nobody Is Perfect and Neither Is Your Writing.

Grammar rules can drown a writer out. Sometimes, it’s simply easier not to follow them.

As a writer, my goal is to create meaningful content for my readers and, to do that, I need to create frequently. But the more frequent you publish, the more your chances increase for making a mistake.

In the beginning stages as a writer, I was passionate about having as few errors as possible in my books — even though these exact books ended having the most errors. I still prefer to have few mistakes in my writing, but it’s not a big deal whenever I find one or someone notices one. The primary goal was to ensure my point was successfully conveyed in my writing, which has remained the same to this day.

Every day new words are being formed, and people are learning and stretching the boundaries of the languages they speak.

If people create new words, then why can’t people create their own grammar rules. Writing provides a beautiful platform to share your thoughts and ideas. Sometimes, not using the rules of language, syntax, and grammar helps to more effectively and creatively convey your ideas through writing. Plus, stressing over every detail of your writing will prevent your work from being shared with the world because it will always be in “draft mode” instead of published.
