Summary

The story "Nobody" is a flash fiction piece about an entity that wanders a road leading nowhere, grappling with its existence and the impact of its presence on others.

Abstract

"Nobody" is a poignant flash fiction narrative that explores themes of identity, existence, and the nature of consciousness. The protagonist, who remains unnamed, is caught in a repetitive journey on a road to nowhere, haunted by a lack of sensory perception and memory. Despite the presence of a forest and the occasional illumination by yellow beams of light, the protagonist is unable to deviate from this endless path. The story hints at a tragic event involving a car accident, suggesting a possible reason for the protagonist's existential crisis. The entity feels disconnected from the world, unable to interact with it in a meaningful way, and is tormented by the inability to feel remorse or provide help, despite a past inclination to do so. The narrative concludes with the protagonist accepting their existence as 'nobody,' a being without identity or purpose, inviting readers to reflect on the essence of self and the consequences of one's actions.

Opinions

  • The protagonist's repeated phrase "I wander down this road that leads nowhere" conveys a sense of futility and existential angst.
  • The mention of the yellow beams of light that illuminate the surroundings but pass through the protagonist suggests a metaphor for fleeting moments of clarity or life that fail to affect the protagonist's state of being.
  • The story implies that the protagonist may be a specter or some form of consciousness that is separate from the physical world, as indicated by the passage through the car and the resulting accident.
  • The protagonist's past attempts to help and feelings of remorse indicate a former connection to humanity, which has since been lost, emphasizing the character's current state of disconnection and apathy.
  • The author's invitation to readers to explore more work and connect on social media suggests an interest in engaging with the audience and fostering a community of writers and readers.

Nobody

A flash fiction

I wander down this road that leads nowhere. I came from nowhere. Not that I can remember. I can’t remember anything.

Who am I?

Something’s wrong with me. I see nothing. I hear nothing. I feel nothing.

I wander down this road that leads nowhere. Light intensifies, just like before, forcing me to look into its yellow beam. Just like before, it illuminates my surroundings. In those moments, I can see the forest again. I’ve tried to walk through it but always find myself back here… on this road.

The yellow beams get closer as they split in two. I pause, waiting for them, beckoning them to me. Just like before, they pass through me. And I feel nothing.

Panicked people screaming as I traveled through their car. They crash off the side of the road, forever joining my torment. I used to feel remorse. I used to help, but that stopped long ago.

I wander down this road that leads nowhere, like everyone else. I came from nowhere, like everyone else.

Who am I?

I’m nobody.
