No, You Can’t Write About Anything You Want and Make Money on Medium
If you’re here to make money, then you need to write in the tags that pay well.

Yes, I know Medium bills itself as a place you can write whatever you want and make money — well, that’s a lie.
There are topics that perform better than others.
Unfortunately, it may not be one you’re passionate about. My suggestion to you is to make it work or find somewhere else to write.
I’m not being harsh either, I had to take my own advice, and quickly, or I would have never made 100 dollars my first month on Medium.
I like writing about pop culture topics (film, tv, media). I also like writing news type political posts. No one claps for those even when they get curated. What they do get is a lot of views; unfortunately, we don’t get paid by views.
I could have persisted and then complained incessantly about how I wasn’t making any money. Instead, I curbed the amount of time I spent writing that type of content and started writing more of what was actually making me money.
So, what are the most profitable topics on Medium?
Well, a look at Medium’s home page will give you some answers. While they have axed most of the categories listed in the top navigation, two remain:
- Self
- Tech
Neither of those two should be surprising since Medium was a tech juggernaut only a few years ago and still maintains some of those bonafides.
Self is where you find a lot of the big-time marketers. A quick look through the tag and you find a lot of writers with tens of thousands of followers, which is always a good sign that there is a lot of money to be there.
A look at the most popular tags on Medium can also glean some information regarding topics worth writing about for those looking to maximize their paychecks.
Here are the Top 10 Most popular tags for 2019 thus far:
1. Startup (301,000 followers)
2. Life (255,000 followers)
3. Politics (239,000 followers)
4. Life Lessons (227,000 followers)
5. Travel (211,000 followers)
6. Entrepreneurship (205,000 followers)
7. Poetry (194,000 followers)
8. Health (187,000 followers)
9. Education (185,000 followers)
10. Love (170,000 followers)
A look at the most popular tags shows some obvious topics that are known to be profitable on the site, such as Entrepreneurship, Health, and Startup.
Others, such as Poetry and Education, may be popular but aren’t really profitable. The key to success with a lot of topics, however, is also getting the right curation combo. So, education on its own might not rake in the claps, but Education combined with Tech may.
Other popular and profitable topics include:
- Sexuality
- Medium
- Relationships
- Productivity
There are plenty of options to choose from when seeking to write on topics that you find interesting that will also be good for your wallet. Don’t be so stubborn that you only write the one thing you are passionate to the exclusion of everything else.
You can’t complain about Medium not working for you if you’re not willing to work with it.
In the end, you have to decide whether you are writing on Medium for fun or money. If you are here for money, then you need to stop bumping your head up against the wall.
If what you’re writing isn’t generating any money, write something else. Medium doesn’t owe your content success. If you have to write about something else, find a topic you like (even if you don’t love it), that’s profitable, and go from there.
It doesn’t mean you can’t ever write about a topic you love; it just means that can’t be the bulk of your writing if you want those Wednesday paydays to be more than just coffee money.
