No Views, No Read Time — I Think Medium Is Shutting Down

Please pack your bags because Medium may not benefit us anymore

Let’s admit it: Medium’s algorithms keep playing games with us. Sometimes, we see a lot of views and reads, and other times, we start feeling that no one will read our content so there’s no need to publish anything. Why does it happen? Is it good or bad? How can I continue making enough money?

First of all, Medium is a private company. It is Ev William’s side hustle and he and his team can change the policies or the way we write and earn money any time. They don’t owe us clarifications because it is their right. However, as a writer who represents a big team, I at least have the right to say that “anyone who publishes quality stories and contributes to Medium’s success deserves a good amount.”

Secondly, it is good for Medium but not for writers who work day and night to keep this site alive. I will be honest: Medium does not pay us the actual amount. Tim Denning also admitted that it would strip away our earnings any time.

Now coming to the point of how to constantly make $1000 or more a month, I’d like to say that the only way to survive on Medium is to publish at least one story a day. I am one of the most active writers (I think so). My stats also suck, but I never take them too seriously and this is not something that keeps me from giving my best.

Why I Publish Daily Even If Algorithms Don’t Remain The Same?

I agree that algorithms don’t remain the same. They will probably not work in the best possible way throughout our lives, but this is not something I am worried about. I have already built an audience, and my followers/readers keep waiting for new content. This means the most to me. It is more important for me to please my readers than algorithms, stats, or money.

Medium is not shutting down but it will not give us a lot of money every day.

Almost all of my stories are curated, except the ones that contain information on Medium. The most noticeable thing is that not everything I write goes viral. Some posts get enough views and make me hundreds of dollars, while others hardly get 100 to 200 views.

Don’t Look At Your Stats

I don’t think any writer, whether aspiring or pro, should look at their stats more than once a day. This is nothing but a headache. Medium algorithms often change on weekends, and if you will see a drop in the number of views, you may get upset. The chance is that you will not want to publish new stories, which is one of the biggest mistakes new writers make.

Your worth doesn’t depend on algorithms or stats.

I suggest you not worry if you don’t get enough views. You are a skilled person. You can write and publish new content daily. Your worth doesn’t depend on algorithms but on the love and support you receive from your followers/readers. When your audience waits for your new story and has high expectations, nobody can stop you from making enough money.

Do you think we should worry about Medium algorithms?
