No Small Genre

I went back and forth with the idea of keeping my “Pen Name” entirely secret. I am not sure that is necessary. I want to keep my name, K.B. Silver, as far as the books I aim to publish confined to the genre of poetry, maybe a memoir if I can ever beat my memories into submission.
I have a lot of other ideas for stories and books, though — more specifically light novels/chapter series. I saw Kindle Vella and wanted to try it out. I wasn’t going to put poetry up in that format, though, but I had a YA dark fairytale story with light romance elements started. That seemed perfect.
When I say there is no small genre, between the two, poetry has by far the smaller readership. In light of the popularity of YA fiction and Fantasy it seemed almost foolish not to at least try publishing it. So I decided to go forth and publish my fantasy/romance/any other serialized stories I come up with. I won’t have to worry about my poetry sitting on the proverbial shelf next to some silly romance story since I used the pen name Hollie Sylvan. I guess I did end up naming myself Hollie after all.
Without further ado, here is the link to the new Kindle Vella Series.
The way Kindle Vella works requires story segments be a minimum of 600 words and a maximum of 6,000 if I remember correctly, but when I did a little research readers prefer the one to two thousand word range. It allows for easy reading chunks, and it is seen as appropriate for the “coins” being spent.
The first three segments are required to be unlocked for zero coins. This allows readers to decide if they like your story. I decided to make these first three chapters on the shorter side, while still giving a good feel for the setting, characters, and tone of the story.
I am Fond of forest settings and fairy themes, so I am having a lot of fun with this. The light romance is a nice change, but as always this story contains underlying themes of trauma, abuse survival, and trauma processing. It is geared for teens and young adults so I am keeping things PG-13, but these are important themes for young people to examine, especially when contemplating close relationships.
Have you published using Kindle Vella? Have you been thinking of it?
