Summary

The poem "No One Looks At Me" by Jonathan Greene explores the complex and intense emotions associated with being seen and loved deeply, from adoration to inadequacy, within a relationship that is both insular and tumultuous.

Abstract

"No One Looks At Me" is a raw and evocative poem that delves into the multifaceted nature of a passionate relationship. The speaker reflects on the unique and profound way their partner looks at them, which ranges from adoration filled with stars and depth to a look of gentle disgust over a forgotten errand. The poem captures moments of intense connection, where the couple's love creates an impenetrable forcefield, as well as moments of toxicity that make others on the street uncomfortable. The speaker reveals a sense of inadequacy, feeling they can never measure up to someone else in their partner's eyes. Despite the relationship's volatility, the speaker is deeply in love and devoted, to the point of feeling like a crumpled mess waiting for their partner's affection. The poem concludes with the realization that this all-consuming relationship has made the speaker invisible to the outside world, as their focus is solely on their partner.

No one looks at me the way you look at me with stars in your eyes and the depths of your soul behind those irises

No one looks at me the way you look at me with gentle disgust because I forgot the f*cking egg rolls last night

No one looks at me the way you do when you’re half-dressed luring me into your web and never letting me go

No one looks at me the way you do when you hate me so because I’m not him and never will be I’m just me Inadequate

No one looks at me when we’re together because our forcefield is impenetrable to the outside world all trying to get in to take our love

No one looks at me when we’re together because it’s so uncomfortable for them and everyone else on the street because we are so toxic

No one looks at me because I only have eyes for you The one I love with all my heart and who loves me back at times

No one looks at me because I am a crumpled mess of a man lying at your feet waiting for you to pet me

That’s why no one looks at me
