No One Is the Perfect College Student
Stop trying to be one.

I don’t believe in perfection.
Whatever you do in life, you are probably striving for perfection each day. That’s great! But you’re never going to make it there.
Even the most highly successful people in the world aren’t perfect. Instead, they turn their imperfections and failures into ways they can improve themselves, their companies or their passions.
But they will never be perfect.
The same goes for college students everywhere: no one is a perfect college student, so stop trying to be one.
Is this you?
Too often, college students are trying to be perfect every day. I see it firsthand here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
They do everything they can for straight-A’s. They strive to become chancellor’s scholar’s, make the Dean’s List or be top of the class. When they do it, they don’t know what they’re missing.
As they’re trying to become the best academic student possible, they’re missing out on all of the other fun opportunities. These include the likes of clubs, surprise road trips with friends, attending sporting events, partying and so much more.
Instead, top students spend their college years hidden in a library study with their nose in a book. It’s okay to do so, but it shouldn’t be all of the time.
While they do so, other students are out there meeting new people, traveling to new places and making the most out of their college years.
I am part of the latter group.
It all comes down to one tips.
Balance Is Key.
You hear time and time again balance is the key to life. While it may be true, it’s also the key to college life too.
In order to have the best college life possible and make the most out of their four years in high education, a student must find balance. If they don’t, they’re in for a rude awakening.
A student should no doubt strive to be the best student they can, but there’s more to college than books and classrooms. There’s a whole big world out there in college waiting to be discovered.
Here’s how you can be a balanced student:
- Join clubs that fit your interests.
- Make true friends and keep them.
- Explore your campus town.
- Attend sports or other live events.
- Have fun!
Closing Thoughts
You don’t want to graduate college with nothing but a slew full of memories of studying all the time. Instead, you want to remember the great times you shared with friends, the experiences you’ll probably never do again.
That’s what college is all about: balance.
It’s easy to fall into the slump of trying to be the best student possible. I know. I’ve been there too.
Nevertheless, you can’t do that. You have to have fun while you’re in school. Otherwise, you’re going to hate yourself later.
Don’t strive to be the perfect college student. Instead, strive to be a balanced one.
You’ll be much better off and have way more fun if you do.
