No Evil Just Efficient Reaction

In nature, the animal instinct is to protect. It happens without thought. Gathering food happens as a reaction. It is a survival tool. Eat or be eaten.

We as humans look at ourselves as advanced, evolved, and developed beings. We have freedom of choice. With this freedom, and mostly the choices it brings, comes indecision. The more choices there is the more time it takes to think about what we are going to do. We don’t always have the luxury of time and a split second could mean winning or losing. Life or death. Whether one is protecting oneself or others it should be done with the most efficient intent.

In martial arts, we strive for the most efficient techniques. We train so they become instinct. They happen without thought. They can have the most devastating results. This is not always our intent.

Our intent is to evade, eliminate, and end a threat. We try to do it with the least effort possible. We want it to happen without thinking. We want it to work.

We learn body mechanics. The way it works and the way it doesn’t. How the structure makes it strong and where it is weak.

We strengthen our muscles so we can have the power to make our structure withstand what we encounter.

We practice our movement slow so that it is fast when we need it. The speed comes from muscle memory.

Repetition ensures what we demand. We need it to happen if we need it.

We have a part of our brain that has these reactions. It is called the reptile brain. In the reptile world, there is no evil intent, only survival. Shutting off the rest of our brain is the hard part. We do it through meditation. We do it through muscle memory. We do it with the knowledge that our structure is strong enough to support our actions without injury.

If and when a threat is encountered there will be an adrenaline dump. This will shut down most of our brain. We react with fight or flight. If we think we cannot win we run. If we cannot run we fight. We do it with no evil intent. We do it with an efficient reaction to eliminate the threat. We want to win. The winner is the one who goes home.
