No, Conservative Parties Don’t Care About The Unborn Either
And it’s more complex than “controlling women”
I’m getting out of my comfort zone here, and testing the waters with some political issues. Here we go!
Today I want to argue against the idea that “conservative Politicians in the US (and elsewhere for what is worth) only care about the unborn.” And that, while it feels like that, it’s not about controlling women.
To begin with, they don’t see women as a threat — although they should.
Instead, their obsession with reproductive rights is a silent (or loud) scream to stay in power.
Why?
Societal issues have taken a scary turn in the US. Sorry for stating the obvious. Some say that the overturning of Roe vs. Wade was the catalyst. I would argue that it is just another consequence.
Liberals are having a hard time believing this, but conservatives know it so well: Conservatives don’t have a winning majority. Why do they know that? Because this is a reality that threatens their power. They now know that the only way to stay in power is to cheat the system.
Even The Former acknowledged that improved voting rights and securing access to voting polls would harm the Republican Party. I really can’t believe someone got away with saying such a thing: acknowledging violating the Constitution.
But, again, that’s the same individual that became president after claiming that the way to keep women doing what he wanted to was to “grab them by the pussy.”
This is another sign that morals and Christianity are not the driving forces of the Republican Party. Just a way to get enough voters to stay in power.
Many research venues are warning about this: As older (more conservative) voters die off, and Millenials and GenZ become the majority, it’d be increasingly hard for Republicans to be in power. See the data-based articles below:
Among them, some sentences to highlight:
An unprecedentedly non-white and secular generation, which came of age in an exceptionally socially liberal era, is never going to have the same politics as a predominately white, highly religious generation, which came up in a socially conservative time, no matter how old the former grows. Source.
And this:
What’s more, the gap in the number of millennials who identify as Democrats rather than Republicans is huge, with more than twice as many self-identified Democrats as Republicans. The next cohort on the roster, Gen Z, is even more liberal and Democratic than millennials and shows no indication of becoming substantially more conservative as it ages. Source.
So, as Jamelle Bouie well states in his New York Times column, “when you’re no longer sure you can win on a level playing field, it’s harder to sustain any enthusiasm for democracy.” So, as the Republican party sees the trend of losing support, they need to try new tactics. Non-Democratic ones (pun intended).
On top of that, the pandemic had a toll on Republican voters. See this “study [that] looked at deaths in both Florida and Ohio during the first 22 months of the pandemic and found the overall excess death rate of Republican voters was 15% higher than that of Democrats. The gap widened further once COVID-19 vaccines were introduced.”
They need more conservative voters. But how do you grow a Conservative population?
Let’s look at more research. I’m not going to give you the answer straight away. What party do you think the majority of college-educated women vote for? Take a guess…
See below:
Yup, you guessed it right. College-educated women are more likely to vote for Liberal parties. And this shows data across all ages, it is higher for Millenials and GenZs.
Let me ask you something else. If you see that your party is losing more and more voters every year and that educated women are less likely to vote for you, what do you do?
You prevent women from getting an education. Please, go out there and ask about the percentage of teenage and young mothers who have gone to earn a university degree. I’ll give you the number: less than 2% of teen moms earn a college degree by age 30.
By preventing teenagers from having access to Sex Ed and birth control, you increase unwanted pregnancies. By preventing abortion, you prevent women from being more educated and voting against you.
Let me ask you. If they truly believed abortions are morally wrong, would they ask their wives and mistresses to have one? Wouldn’t they make sure perinatal and labor care was fully covered? No, they want you born, uneducated, and facing financial hardship.
Their ultra-conservative supporters feel strongly about the abortion issue. So they’ll use them and their feelings for their political gains.
What about the fact that access to safe abortions lowers crime?
Again, do you think they care about crime going up? They live in their huge mansions in privileged neighborhoods. If anything, crime going up plays an advantage on conservative parties too. Win-win for the Elephant in the room.
So yes, we can stop saying that conservatives “care about babies until they are born,” because it’s completely false. They only care about staying in power, no matter the means. And they are afraid.
