Night Gazing

In twilight

Awakening in the night

To unfamiliar sounds, our search

For answers brought us

Outside, but we could not

Find the cause.

You show me the sky,

And the wonders there,

Observed in twilight hours.

The planetary app on your phone

Shows us what we are viewing

In the sky above.

A slice of moon takes center stage,

With Venus shining brightly

Off to the left, and a glowing red

Mars to the right. Still further

Right, Saturn, then Pluto unseen,

overshadowed by Jupiter

Beaming out into the night.

All of this we would have missed

Had we not awakened abruptly

To an unknown caller.

Still unknown as we returned to

Our slumber, the house now quiet,

With no explanation

For the disturbance, and sleep

Comes easily.
