Summary

The author advocates for embracing the full spectrum of one's thoughts and ideas in writing, regardless of their fit within a specific niche, to avoid creative constriction and share one's unique perspectives with the world.

Abstract

The article titled "Niches Get Stitches" with the subtitle "And wind up in ditches" suggests that writers should not limit themselves to a particular niche. The author emphasizes that ideas that form in the mind, even if they are unrelated to one's usual subject matter, should be expressed and shared. This is because keeping these thoughts unexpressed can lead to a sense of frustration and stifled creativity. The author argues that writing is a means of communication and that stories should be told, regardless of whether they resonate with a wide audience or invite criticism. The piece encourages writers to write freely and without self-imposed constraints, suggesting that even negative feedback can be turned into a narrative.

Opinions

  • The author believes that all ideas deserve to be shared, regardless of their alignment with one's typical writing topics.
  • Keeping unexpressed thoughts can lead to personal dissatisfaction and an unhealthy expansion of untold stories.
  • Sharing one's work, even in the face of negative opinions or disinterest from the audience, is crucial for creative fulfillment.
  • The author suggests that criticism can be a source of inspiration rather than a deterrent, implying that it can be transformed into a story itself.
  • There is an emphasis on the importance of writing without confining oneself to a niche, as this can lead to broader opportunities and a more authentic expression of one's creativity.

If words about a topic develop in my brain, I’m not going to disregard them. Even if it’s at the opposite end of the spectrum from what I normally write about, the description about this specific subject is materializing for a reason. What’s that reason? To share!

I have thoughts on a topic, so much so that a story begins to form in my head. It does no good in my head. Left in my brain, it will only expand until it’s uncontrollable. Then I get cranky.

Solution? Share it with the world! Far and wide! Even if the masses don’t care. Even if they tell me to “shut up, you’re stupid and a stinky writer.” I’ll write a story about how you think I’m a stinky writer when I’m actually brilliant.

Write everything down, and don’t put yourself in a niche bubble.
