Nice White People That Care About Black People Stay On Twitter

If you leave, you may be racist after all

Yes, I’ve read the news too. Use of the n-word increased by 500 percent the day Elon Musk took over Twitter. Other expressions of hate have continued to rise exponentially on the platform. At the same time, I keep on seeing people leaving Twitter en masse. Often, these are white people. Some are doing it because they hate Musk, others because they are afraid he is going to let Trump back on, others because he proposed that verified accounts pay $8 a month, others because he has fired lots of Tweeps, and the list goes on.

The thing is if everyone leaves Twitter, who will stay?

I’ll tell you who: the racists, the antisemites, the misogynists, the sexists, the homophobes, the transphobes, in short, the haters.

These are the people that will stay. Like bad weed, they’ll continue to spread hate, to radicalize one another. We’ll be in for an exponential amount of hate that will inevitably translate into hateful terrorist actions that will target and hurt minorities.

Now is the time for white people to show with their very actions that Black Lives Matter. It is now that they need to prove that actions speak louder than words.

Nature hates a vacuum. An empty space will be filled. For the Stephen Kings or the AOCs that leave, hateful characters will take their place. These people have become so emboldened after four years of Trump, the January 6th mutiny, and the elections of populist right-wing groups in places like Sweden and Italy, that they will thrive. In fact, they will multiply.

I always say that racism continues to gain new ground because good white people do nothing. Leaving Twitter is basically the equivalent of doing nothing or giving up on the fight against evil and hate. It’s like throwing your hands in the air and surrendering to the villain, it’s giving up the fight.

I won’t be leaving Twitter. I know that my content makes me a target for vile white supremacists and racists. They haven’t attacked me much on Twitter because they knew that if they came for me, my white anti-racist army would stand up for me. White people were like armor protecting from the bottom-of-the-barrel haters.

What’s going to happen now when they all leave the platform? I’ll be overrun by the haters for sure.

So this is my plea to white people:

«Please don’t go».

I know that you might hate Elon Musk and that you’re itching to teach him a lesson by signing off on his newly acquired platform.

Before you do that, take a minute to think about who you’ll really hurt by doing so. It won’t be Musk, it’ll be people like me – a Black woman – the most disrespected group in the whole wide world.

Will I be able to speak my truth with hateful trolls like cerbères gnawing at my tweets, insulting me, and threatening to harm me? Will I be able to withstand that type of situation for long? I seriously doubt it. So please, before you sign off, think twice. Because if you are a true ally, you’ll stay to show me by your very actions that my life, my Black life, does matter.

My question to you now is this: Will you stay? Let me know in the comments.

Thank you for reading my perspective.
