News Break vs. Vocal.media: Which Writing Platform Will Make You More Money?
I spent time learning about these platforms so you didn’t have to

If you’ve been scrolling on Medium at all in the past few months, you’ve probably seen stories from writers about their endeavors on News Break. It’s an up-and-coming platform similar to Medium. They pay their writers for the number of views they get on a story, sound familiar?
On the other hand, we have Vocal.media. It’s been around for years and it’s in the more low-key sector of freelance writing. They too pay their writers depending on the number of views they get per story.
I’ve had some experience with both platforms and read a ton of stories about them as well. It was boring research, but I did it so you didn’t have to go through the same thing as me.
For freelance writers, it’s always exciting to find new platforms to write on. Still, some are just a waste of time and others actually live up to the hype. Regardless, I’ll give you a brief rundown of what I’ve learned about each of these platforms.
Maybe I’ll do a follow-up story comparing the better platform to Medium? We’ll see.
Vocal.media
If you’re like me then you probably haven’t heard of Vocal.media until earlier this year. Apparently, it’s been a thing for years now but not many writers know about it.
It offers different ‘communities’ of topics for writers to choose for their stories. After writing a story, the editors look it over and if they like it then they publish it on their website. If they don’t like it then you have the option to resubmit it.
It’s free to write on Vocal.media, but there is also a paid membership for $5 a month that you can subscribe to. The platform claims that writers who pay for a membership get their stories broadcasted front and center to more readers.
I’m not sure if this is actually true but I do know that the idea of paying a fee so I can make money is backward in my mind. I’m a paying member on Medium though so it’s hypocritical for me to single out Vocal.media over a $5 subscription.
Before publishing anything on Vocal.media, I read up on it from other writers. The platform allows you to copy and paste stories you’ve published on other sites to their site. This is really cool and let’s be real, it’s easy money since those stories are already written.
After trying it myself, I’ve found it’s a pain in the ass to paste your stories because none of the formatting carries over. That’s right, every bold, subheading and italicized word has to be redone. It’s still better than having to write brand new stories.
Even though I only published two stories for my research, I actually got a couple hundred views in a month on both of them. I can safely say this website is legit and actually has readers.
However, maybe it’s because I’m not a paying member but the money I received for these views was awful. For 250 reads on one story, I earned $1.02.
Garbage.
Sure, the stories were both previously published in other places, but for the same number of reads on Medium I would’ve earned a few bucks.
Even worse is that you need $35 to cash out your ‘wallet’ on Vocal.media and send funds to your bank account. That’s where I drew the line. I will not be publishing any more stories on Vocal.media.
At least not until I decide to pay for a membership.
Here’s the bottom line for Vocal.media.
Pros:
- Previously published stories can be copied over from any site.
- Editors aren’t strict about publishing.
- It’s a good place to practice writing and get exposure.
Cons:
- Horrible pay for the number of views per story.
- $35 is way too high to withdraw funds to your bank.
- A paid membership is needed for more story promotion.
News Break
In the other corner, we have News Break.
It’s an up-and-coming platform that has a creator program where writers get paid based on the number of views on their stories. Many Medium writers have signed up to write on News Break and the platform is steadily increasing. It doesn’t have the seniority Vocal.media does but its name is more prevalent right now.
This platform also allows writers to copy over stories that were published previously on other websites. This is always a great sign on any platform.
I’m going to be completely transparent with you about News Break — just like I was with Vocal.media. I don’t have too many bad things to say about the platform, my experience with them was very short.
After signing up to become part of their creator program and in three business days, they sent me an email back saying I didn’t make the cut. No explanation. I wasn’t surprised by this because all of my research about News Break told me that even though many writers on Medium are writing on News Break, 10x more have been rejected.
It seems like they reject everyone and I’m not just saying that because I got the declined. Tons of great Medium writers have written about how News Break doesn’t want them. It seems like the platform is only taking the Tim Denning’s of Medium.
From what I’ve read, News Break pays well. The rumor is it pays much better than Vocal.media. I don’t have any personal experience to back this up, but somehow I believe it. If you’re only accepting a few super high-quality writers than it’s most likely because you’re paying them decently.
With that said, here’s the bottom line for writing on News Break:
Pros:
- Good pay per view on a story.
- High level of exposure because of recent boom in popularity.
- Not much competition because not many writers get accepted.
Cons:
- Hard to get accepted to creator program.
If you’re really looking for a new place to write for a little extra cash, Vocal.media is always open for your stories. You don’t even have to write new content.
On the flip side, if you really want a challenge and want to make good money while still not having to write entirely new stories, News Break is your best bet.
