Personal Finance 101 — What was your 2021 Resolution — Do you remember?

New Year’s Resolution

Make Your Plan Now for 2022

New Year’s Resolutions. For some people this is something that haunts them every year. They find themselves stressing out even before the New Year begins. I propose taking methodical steps to approaching the New Year. Start planning for it now and get your goals on paper. I’ve got just the plan to set you up for success in 2022 and every year thereafter.

How close did you come to achieving last year’s resolutions? Do you even remember what they were?

As a student of self-help, last year and the year before that, I read a lot of books and listened to a lot of podcast to fulfill my quest and thirst for knowledge. I believe that life betterment comes with continually seeking knowledge and being curious.

In June of 2019, I put a plan in action from all those podcasts to which I had listened. I gathered everything I would need to ensure I achieved success and I got started. I created my personal Debt Resolution Act. I was carrying more debt than I should have at my age. So I resolved to get out of debt.

This required me to first, have a change of mindset. That’s what I got from reading the books and from listening to the podcasts. When I knew I was ready to change my habits and employ the tactics I learned, I set out to document my journey. I gathered every bill, every statement, everything that had numbers on them and I documented them in a single place. At first, it was a yellow legal note pad. But ultimately, I began tracking all my debts in Undebt.it. ← I trust this website to thoroughly, I am not an affiliate member. The site is free to use, unconditionally, but, if you decided to pay the annual fee, I will receive a portion. The annual fee is $12, but they have a 50% off sale going on right now through Christmas.

In that remaining six month of 2019, I paid off $27,531. In 2020, I paid off $51,327. At the end of this year, I will have paid off approximately $71,000. As you can see, my 2021 was an incredible year.

Debt paid off thus far until November 2021. One month left in this year. Author’s personal image.

So how will you make 2022 a successful year for yourself? Start with more than a resolution. Sit down and map out what you want to achieve on paper. Have a date in mind by when you will have this task completed. It must be done before the beginning of the New Year.

Whatever number of goals you intend to accomplish, write each one on a separate sheet. If you have only one major goal, one sheet is all you’ll need. If it’s 15, your first sheet will be your table of content. It will be the master sheet of the goals you want to accomplish for 2022.

Sheet #1 is the Master Goal Table of Content if you have more than one goal.

The second sheet will be a single sheet with your plan for goal #1 and the action steps you must take daily, weekly and monthly to show progress in achieving that goal.

Sheet #2 will have all the daily, weekly and monthly activities to accomplish goal #1.

Do this for everything in your table of contents. Being intentional will make you pay attention to all your goals. This practice will help you to continue the mindset shift you achieved to focus on all that you intend to accomplish.

Your goal planner may be short or rather lengthy, but I want you to focus your efforts on your goals in order first. As you accomplish goals throughout the year, you may find that you can double up your efforts and work on multiple goals at once. Believe me, I think you will find it easier than you may first believe. Now that you have a mindset shift, everything will be different.

Imagine, five years from now when you review your successes and how you changed your life, you will have pages and pages of what you accomplished and you will be able to share your plan with others. Congratulations, you’ve just made yourself a guru.
