New Year Resolution? No Thanks
A tale of better roads to take

It’s that time of the year again. As the calendar inches close to 2024, I can imagine a lot of people making these “new year resolutions,” the whole “New Year New Me” thingamajig, and then some. One argument in favor of this resolution spree is perhaps the clear starting point in time. It sounds quite appealing when we think that a change in calendar can inspire a change in a person.
That being said, in our heart of hearts, we know what happens. At least most of us.
Here’s a small poem on that whole ritual, and on changing of one, in itself.
I will eat more fruit, be a fitness paragon,
I will learn to draw, a paint or a guitar,
I will run every day, pen every week,
I will read a book a month, a course a year.
How many of these were vowed on the first day,
A New Year Resolution, a promise of change,
The purported beginning of a new, better me,
One to be improved from the day before?
Riding the wave of hope, of new tidings,
Replacing a calendar, as will I my bad points,
This promise was made to every one in me,
The athlete, the artist, the poet, the engineer,
The man, the mind, the soul and the body.
And then came the second, third, tenth, thirtieth,
The new year’s euphoria sublimated,
Leaving in wake a hollow promise once made,
Trapped in the cycle of everyday chores,
Deadlines, agendas, conflicts, stresses or issues.
A resolution whimsically passed, not to stay,
One planned, never to be acted on.
Failed enough, I looked at myself in disdain,
Forced to ask, do I need an excuse to change?
What does improvement even amount to,
If not done every today, and not tomorrow,
In pursuit of the small goals, clear and straight,
Nothing absurd or abrupt, no place to fail?
No need to lose a battle to win, just get them both,
No special need for “new year,” only for “new me.”
Have you ever failed your new year resolution? Or have you never bothered to set one, as you know your priorities well ahead? Do you have a success story, and want to tell about it?
Please do write your thoughts and opinions!
