New Writers — Do These 4 Things Before Submitting Your Stories
Get your stories published quickly!

Are you patiently waiting for your story to get approved? Much to your dismay, you did not get your story published. Instead, you received a private note from an editor.
Now you’re in a back and forth chain of messages and your story isn’t getting published yet. Well, you can avoid all of this!
Here are four things you can do before submitting your stories. You’ll increase the chances of getting it published sooner rather than later. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Correct Formatting
Medium typically prefers a specific format for stories. Many publications will reject stories based on incorrect formatting alone.
Make sure you have a title and a subtitle with the proper format. A photo generally appears after the subtitle.
All photos also require proper crediting.
Checking Publication Rules
Publications have their own set of rules. Before submitting any stories, review all of the rules carefully. Don’t skim over them!
Editors can and will reject you. We know if you didn’t read the rules.
For example, there are publications who only accept drafts, require a shoutout to other writers, or have other strict requirements.
If you want to publish your story there, you’ll need to fully understand and adhere to their rules.

Use Correct Tags
Depending on the publication, you may be required to use certain tags. As an example, we specifically require that the New Writers Welcome tag be used when submitting to the New Writers Welcome publication.
There are numerous submissions that are returned because the tag isn’t included. This is an easy fix to help get your story published sooner rather than later.
Take Advantage of Grammarly
Some people may not prefer to use Grammarly, but the tool does have some basic features that can help clean up your writing. Even the free tool can provide some useful suggestions to improve your story.
It can also pick up typos that you might have missed. Using the tool is quick and painless and you can reduce the chances of your story being rejected.
Takeaway
- Use the correct formatting based on the submission guidelines
- Review all of the rules of the publication before submitting any stories
- Use correct tags
- Download the free version of Grammarly to check your work
