Summary

The Brain is a Noodle publication has announced new updates including a new sign-up process for writers, an improved submission checklist emphasizing self-promotion and amplifying diverse voices, and a central place for themed writing challenges.

Abstract

The publication "The Brain is a Noodle" is undergoing several enhancements. It is actively seeking new writers and has introduced a Google form to streamline the sign-up process. The submission guidelines have been revised to encourage writers to include links to their previous work and to highlight pieces by other writers, particularly those from diverse backgrounds whose voices may be overshadowed by algorithms or societal norms. Additionally, a new section will be created to showcase submissions from monthly themed challenges, fostering a sense of community among participating writers.

Opinions

  • The editor finds it important to challenge the dominance of algorithms in determining which articles gain visibility, advocating for a more thoughtful approach to content amplification.
  • There is a strong emphasis on community-building and mutual support among writers, as evidenced by the new submission guideline encouraging the promotion of both one's own work and that of others.
  • The publication values diversity and inclusivity, urging writers to amplify voices across various dimensions such as cultural, racial, religious, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disability.
  • The editor believes in the importance of craft and message in articles, beyond just their ability to provoke emotion or controversy.
  • The introduction of themed challenges and a dedicated space for their submissions is intended to create a more engaging and interactive experience for writers within the publication's community.

New Updates to The Brain is a Noodle!

If you haven’t yet, sign up to be a writer!

This is a quick check-in to share that there are THREE exciting (eggciting?) changes to this publication moving forward.

#1: Signing up to be a writer

For those who haven’t yet, we are still recruiting new writers! There is now a new way to sign up (*akhem*, a google form because I’m all about organization).

#2: New and Improved Submission Checklist

I’ve updated the submission guidelines for easier perusal via quick check-in questions for whether you’ve already something.

New submission guideline:

Have you a) included one link to other pieces you’ve written and b) amplified a piece from another writer you think deserves more attention?

The story behind this change:

I continually find it silly to let an algorithm dictate who we read and whose pieces are amplified. While it often brings to our attention important pieces that should be consumed, often those pieces are ones that are inflammatory or tug at your emotions, without care for the craft and message within those articles.

That’s why I wanted to take the time to build a community of writers and readers to discover other writers and pieces that the algorithm may not pick up.

This is why I’m including this new guideline so that I’m encouraging writers to not only unashamedly amplify their own past work (yes! sometimes we need to self-promote!), but also to promote others work.

I’m encouraging all to give special thought on amplifying the voices of individuals whose voices are buried not only by the algorithm, but also are systemically buried due to the “norm” that we live within.

Consider amplifying the voices of writers along any or all of these dimensions of diversity: cultural diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, age diversity, sex/ gender diversity, sexual orientation, disability.

Hop on the submission page for a few examples and templates!

#3: A Central Place for Challenges

In addition to weekly (sometimes even daily) poetry prompts, I’ll be planning monthly themed challenges!

There will now be a new section housing the submissions to any themed challenges so that writers can find a community of others who also jumped in on the same challenge!

Stay tuned to find out more.
