New to Medium? Me too.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far.

Before I was a spiritualist, I was first a writer. I started around the age of 9 or 10, writing fan fiction about the Backstreet Boys and other various celebrities my friends and I were crushing on at the time.

It was my passion, something that came to me naturally and I embraced every part of it. I loved how it allowed me to create a world of my own. It gave me the freedom to express my inner thoughts which was something I had trouble doing growing up.

As I grew older I became “too busy" to write other than essays for school (which I did enjoy a little). The more time that passed by; I started gravitating more towards other goals and passions and my writing was set on the shelf to collect dust.

It had been 18 years since I last wrote anything other than a social media post. I always spoke of writing a book one day but boy was I rusty.

And then I came across the Medium App.

Medium has become a go-to platform for many writers including myself. However, with so many writers on here, it can be a real challenge to stand out and gain a following.

After a lot of research and reading article after article, I figured out a few techniques that helped me gain 400 followers and increase my views and reads in only one month. It takes time and dedication but if you’re willing to put in the effort you will get the results.

Here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way that helped me get into the flow of things.

One of the first steps to success on the medium app is to find your niche. With a wide range of topics and genres covered here, it’s essential to find your unique voice. This will help you attract a dedicated audience who is interested in your content and keep them coming back for more.

Therefore, it’s crucial to write catchy and attention-grabbing headlines that will pull readers in and make them want to click and read your article. Use strong and descriptive words, ask questions, or make bold statements to grab the reader’s attention and pique their interest.

Adding visuals to your articles can make them more engaging and visually appealing. Use high-quality images, videos, or GIFs to break up the text and add visual interest to your work. This will also help you and your writing stand out in a sea of text-heavy articles on the platform. Who doesn’t like picture books?

Use Subheadings and Bulleted Lists

Readers on the medium app tend to skim through articles rather than reading them word for word. To make your article more reader-friendly, use subheadings and bulleted lists to break up the text and make it easier to digest. I know personally that seeing extremely long piles of words on a page tends to make me automatically tired. The same goes for a lot of our readers. This will also help readers navigate through your article and find the information they are looking for quickly.

Engage with Your Audience

One of the unique features of the medium app is the ability for readers to leave comments and engage with the writer. As a writer, it’s essential to respond to comments and engage with your audience. When I first started receiving responses it blew me away. I was very sensitive about my work and the feedback I received was very supportive. You won’t regret interacting with others on here. Everyone is very friendly that I’ve encountered. This will not only help you build a relationship with your readers but also show that you value their opinions and feedback.

Promote Your Work

Writing on the medium app is not just about publishing your work; it’s also about promoting it. I promote my work on all of my social media accounts and I message my family and friends as well. However, it doesn’t stop there. You can also join writing groups and communities on the medium app to connect with other writers and promote your work. The possibilities are endless.
