New Rules Can Hurt Existing New MPP Writers

Should Medium just drop us or give us a break like they are doing with existing writers

Image of Author by Author

This is not an article just crying “Not Fair!” or complaining because it may affect me. I’m hoping that since the rule changes are new, there will be a modification for new writers that are serious to be on Medium.

Later in this article I will give a better, more fair option for Medium to use with the new writers that are already in the MPP before the new rules were announced. I will also show how the system can be gamed by users which is NOT what Medium is trying to accomplish.

Existing writers versus new writers

The existing writers who have not written anything in a while are given a break in that they can keep active by writing once every 6 months. Why can’t existing new writers be given a similar break in that if I don’t have 100 followers that I must write 10 articles in a calendar month to show we are serious and will keep us active.

This will give us serious new writers a chance to gradually get to 100 followers.

Starting new

I joined Medium because I wanted to start writing again. I had stopped writing as a teenager because real life interfered. I found Medium and decided that it was a great place to start up again and possibly to make a little money to enhance my Social Security. So, because I wanted to make a little bit of money, I immediately joined the MPP (Medium Partners Program) when I created my account. Since I wanted to make a little money, it was only fair to pay so that others get paid from my membership.

Older writers on Medium have been posting here and on YouTube how their Medium statistics have been down. This change affects new writers as they most likely will not get followers quickly and need time to grow.

Now there are new rules

Medium just disclosed that the MPP will be handled differently which may affect me. I know the rules can change at any time, but maybe the rules are a little too strict for existing MPP members.

If you are an existing new MPP writer, you can stay in the MPP until January 2022, and then you are dropped if you do not have at least 100 followers.

As of January 2022, anyone joining Medium will need 100 followers to be eligible for MPP. They also implemented a new referral program. They set up a page for you to send readers to if they want to join up. You will get a reward or a bonus and residuals for everybody who does sign up through you. You also will need to make $10.00 (USD) to collect the money. Another rule states that you need to publish once every six months to stay active.

Starting slow as a new writer

I posted my first story at the end of July and then had it self-published because I did not know what I was doing. I found a publication that would take it even though it was self-published, so I submitted it. Up to now I wrote about 10 stories and have made less than a dollar and have about 20 followers. This shows I made progress in the first four weeks.

So now that I made a little bit of money, I’m hoping that I can increase it little by little. I know my statistics may be average or maybe even a little more than average, but I will grow.

I’ve already read an article where the author mentioned if you see somebody with two digits of followers you should follow them so we don’t lose them as writers. Now the intention was good because we didn’t want to lose people that are writing, but it gives a way that people can game the system which Medium is trying two eliminate.

Uncertainties as a paying member

I wonder what’s going to happen if I get any referrals before January. I’m supposed to make money from the referrals. Do I lose that income until I get 100 followers? What if I added the join Medium referral link to the bottom page of my stories? I will want to take it off all the stories because I won’t be getting anything out of it. I don’t think Medium would mind it staying there because they’ll get new subscribers but that they don’t have to pay anybody anything.

Now what I just said I’m not faulting Medium for wanting to make money because that’s what keeps this site up. But if you’re going to start procedures with writers and then midstream just take it away from them, it’s just not right and doesn’t sit right with everybody.

Future changes?

If this can happen now what’s going to change in the future that might take away earnings once you’re really established. Well, I know things must change over time, but I think Medium should think a little more of what the ramifications are before they make certain changes.
