New Planet That Could Support Life Has Been Identified By Astronomers
It is very close to the Sun
Astronomers announce the detection of a planet located near the Sun. This planet is extremely light and can support life, as it appears that there is liquid water on its surface. The telescope of the Southern European Observatory, located in Chile, has detected a planet orbiting a star called Proxima Centauri.
This planet has only a third of the total mass of planet Earth, so it has been listed as the lightest of the 3 detected so far in the Proxima Centauri system, just over four light-years away from the Sun.
Researchers say it is one of the lightest planets ever discovered, one of those outside the Solar System. shows that our nearest star neighbor seems to be full of interesting new worlds, in the hands of further studies and future explorations ”.
Astronomers have noticed that this planet orbits between a star and its habitable zone, that is, a space outside the star, but around it, where liquid water can form if there is a planet there.
Previously, scientists have discovered two other planets, Proxima b and Proxima c, the first orbiting every 11 days and has a mass comparable to that of our planet, and the second is in an orbit longer than five years around the star. The next be known since 2020, and during this discovery, scientists have noticed clues to a signal corresponding to an object with an orbit of five days.
Due to the fact that the signal was weak, the performance of ESPRESSO (Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations) was needed, an observation instrument that confirmed that those signals were not only the result of a star transformation, but also the signals of a real planets. ”After new observations, we were able to confirm this signal as a new candidate planet. I was excited about the challenge of detecting such a small signal and, in doing so, discovering an exo-planet so close to Earth. ” said astronomer Faria.
