Summary

The article outlines the unconventional and often challenging realities of being a high school teacher, emphasizing the need for adaptability and compliance over common sense.

Abstract

The author, Don Sabado, provides a satirical and insightful list of requirements for high school teachers that go beyond traditional expectations. These include the ability to disregard common sense, follow directives unquestioningly, endure frequent "WTF" moments, always agree with superiors, sit through tedious meetings, write lesson plans on demand, volunteer for extra tasks, understand grade inflation, accept undue blame, and concur with consultants. The piece is a reflection on the sometimes absurd demands placed on educators, highlighting the importance of resilience and a sense of humor in the profession.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that common sense may not be valued or practical in the context of school policies and directives.
  • There is an implied expectation for teachers to be subservient, always agreeing with their bosses and consultants, which may stifle independent thinking or constructive dissent.
  • The article hints at a bureaucratic environment where paperwork, such as lesson plans, is prioritized, potentially over actual teaching.
  • The mention of "WTF" moments and taking blame for uncontrollable situations indicates a work environment that can be frustrating and unrewarding.
  • The author's tone suggests a level of cynicism about the state of the education system, particularly in how teachers are treated and the hoops they must jump through.
  • By inviting readers to add or remove items from the list based on their experiences, the author acknowledges that these issues are widespread and not limited to his own school.
