Never Say the Market Is Over Saturated
Here Is How To Work Around A Populated Niche
If you have ever been discouraged from entering into a niche just because it is “over-saturated”, you would know the frustration hearing this would cause.
There is nothing worse in the business world than being let down from embarking on a niche you are passionate about by so-called “experts” who claim to know it all.
I have heard this endless times since I started my passive income journey back in 2011. It seemed like whatever side hustle I wanted to embark on, there was always someone telling me that market was too saturated.
“You don’t stand a chance, corporate companies have already established themselves and its really hard to stick out!”
“Why would customers leave the global supply chains and trust you instead with their health and skin?!”
“Don’t you see how many sellers are offering this”
“Get out and embark on something different before its too late and you risk losing your investment and getting crushed by the competition”
I’ve heard it all.
I’ve had enough seeing ordinary people with brilliant unique ideas being shut down right at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey.
Don’t equal your success with low competition and tapping into new niches.
Instead, utilize this saturation to create a challenge for yourself to be unique in your creations. Creating unique products and services is an attention magnet.
Why Do They Tell You It's “Oversaturated”?
There are two groups of people who discourage you from entering into a market:
- Those who entered and had no success. They implemented the wrong tactics or weren't as consistent and committed to seeing the results. They gave up and therefore are reflecting their own failures on you.
- Those who are successful at a specific niche and tell you it's saturated to avoid more people entering the same market and disturbing their success. They view you as a potential competitor especially if you are wanting to enter a small sub-niche.
Why I don’t follow the ‘saturation rule’?
In most of the side hustles that I embarked on from Vocal, Youtube to Skillshare and Redbubble, I try not to base my decision on whether the market is saturated or not.
For example, if I had been frightened to enter the sticker market on Redbubble back in 2019 because it was saturated with thousands of designers, I wouldn’t have sold stickers till this day.
I do not ignore the data, but I do not completely rely on numbers as an indication of whether I will succeed or not.
This is mostly because it demotivates me and discourages me from pursuing based on passion, especially at the start.
Note that I only follow this rule when my side hustle is free to join as a seller. I do not embark on anything that requires me to pay to earn, as I did so in the past and learnt from my failures.
Take The First Step
The first step is really hard to take for most people whether that is placing your first design or publishing your first video. You want to hit the iron while it's hot.
- Strive to add a unique touch to your product, whether it's in the way you promote it, the visual design elements, or the contents.
- Observe what is the problem in your niche and what are solutions that you could offer to these problems.
- Make a note of some of your competitors and observe what they are doing to get their customers and close the sale. Take inspiration from them, but never copy what they do.
- If you are entering a large niche with strong competition and exceedingly high numbers, find sub-niches you would like to embark on. This will cut down on the competition and increase your exposure.
- With time, once you have established yourself in the sub-niche, then you are free to spread your wings and strive to conquer.
A Few Final Words:
- There is enough room for us all.
- We all have the unique fingerprint touch that no one shares with us. Unleash your inner creativity and get creating.
- Customers will come and trust you once you offer unique items that are worthy of purchasing.
