Never Forget Your Unique Beauty

I felt inspired this morning to write a letter to you, whoever you are. There is beauty to your being, inside of you, waiting to be shown to the world — and to yourself.

A big part of my purpose, I believe, is to help others to see their own beauty. It doesn’t come from a place of ego or a thought that I’m any better than you. Because I am not. I am just like you, with my insecurities, joys, dreams and challenges.

I often write what I wish someone would have told me throughout my life when I needed it the most. That is how I know that there is someone out there who needs to hear this right now.

You are beautiful beyond measures

I am not talking about your external features such as your body, your eyes or your hair. Although, I am sure you are beautiful on the outside too. But seeing beauty in all those things comes automatically after seeing the beauty that’s inside of you. And you have so much beauty, I don’t doubt that for one second.

You might wonder how I can possibly know that you are beautiful inside when I haven’t even met you. Or maybe I have. Either way, I know, because all people have a beautiful side to them. So why would you be any different?

Is seeing beauty naive?

I have been told many times that I am naive for seeing the best in people. But my heart has always felt differently about this so I never changed it. It has actually become even stronger with time. But seeing beauty in others doesn’t mean that bad treatment is alright. It simply creates a sense of love and compassion that I think is good for both you and for others.

Every person has something beautiful to show you. Just as you have something beautiful to show others. We need each other in that way.

Do I fail sometimes when I put my own needs and my ego above everything else? You bet I do. Which is proof that we are all still learning and growing, including me.

Why you might not see your own beauty

Maybe nobody has told you that you are beautiful. Maybe you have heard it but only on occasion. Maybe you were bullied when you were a child or have been rejected a lot. Or maybe nobody simply taught you how to see your own light. I know that was the case for me.

It wasn't that I wasn’t beautiful, I just didn’t know that I was.

The things we hear affect us as much as the things we don’t hear. Especially when it is things that we need to hear — as children, teens and adults.

“You are beautiful, you are needed, you are worthy — you matter” are all things we need to hear, both from others and ourselves. But many of us don’t.

Don’ believe everything you hear

Has someone been harsh on you and told you that you are ugly? You are not my love. Has someone told you that you are worthless, dumb, not good enough? Don’t believe them, it’s a lie.

One of my favorite affirmations from Dr. Wayne Dyer is “What other people think of me is none of my business”. This can be a tricky statement to grasp at first. I can only say that it takes practice to believe it if you have a tendency to take in other people’s opinions a lot.

It makes sense that you do, however. You have been taking in other people’s opinions of you since you were a child. From early childhood, your surroundings shaped you. Then you went into kindergarten and school where you were told some more. Maybe you heard something about your looks, your brightness or who you were as a person. If those things were unloving, they made a big impact on your life too.

How to realize your own beauty

Your sense of beauty comes from within. So what do you do when you don’t feel beautiful? There is only one way to get there and that is to do the inner work that needs to be done. It will sometimes be painful because you have to break through the layers, forgive a lot and reshape your sense of identity to an extent. That’s okay, take your time.

Reading books and listening to personal development and spiritual content, getting coaching, healing, gratitude, connecting to self through stillness, working with affirmations are things that I have found to be helpful.

You don’t have to do everything at once, go at your own pace. Choose what works for you. Experiment. Try. Fail. Try again. Gain. What matters is the work that is being done. By putting small things into practice now, you create big changes for the future.

Self-acceptance will come

It took me a long time to accept myself. When I did that, my desire to change my body and beat myself up for certain features stopped. Apologizing for who I was inside stopped. It is a strange and profound feeling how all of that need begins to fade away as you start sensing your own beauty.

It takes time, but it will come.

I still have work to do, we all do. The deepest wounds take time to heal and changing your self-image is a process. But no matter where you are on your journey, you are beautiful. You matter to this world and to the people in it. There is something so special about you. Don’t ever forget that.

I promise you that the sense of freedom you will feel from doing the work is worth it. This work is long-lasting instead of it being a temporary fix. In other words, you will benefit from it, over and over again.

Never forget your unique beauty.
