Netflix K-Drama: The King’s Affection (2021)| Korean Version of Prince and the Pauper

The birth of twins was considered a bad omen in Joseon. So when twins were born to the crown princess ~ a boy and a girl ~ drastic desperate measures were taken to conceal the birth of the baby girl.

The K-Drama is originally based on a manhwa converted into a webtoon called “Yeonmo (연모)” written by Lee SoYoung.

“The King’s Affection” (2021-) is set during the Joseon Dynasty and this series starts on a very serious note. Twins were born to the royal princess: a boy and a girl. The king wanted to kill the baby girl and ordered a massacre. All of those who knew about the birth of the twins had to be killed, and the twin girl who was born had to die!

Like any loving mother would do, the crown princess hatched a plan to save her child’s life. The mother faked the death of her daughter and had her taken away to grow up elsewhere. But there was a fire, and the child lost the home that she grew up in and her caretaker also died. Consequently, she took to begging on the streets. A woman took her into the palace and she became a maid.

The little girl was outside doing her chores and her brother, the crown prince was outside doing whatever princes do. Accidentally, she, a lowly maid, crossed paths with her twin brother, the crown prince, and that’s where the story begins.

If you are familiar with Mark Twin’s novel, “The Prince and the Pauper” published in 1881, this Netflix series puts a spin on that story. In the novel, there were twin boys. However, in this K-drama series, there is a boy and a girl who are twins; however, the girl has to dress like a boy.

It starts off innocently. The prince just wants to go outside of the palace and have some fun like a normal kid. He gets the little girl to trade places with him. She dresses up as a prince and stays in the palace. He leaves the palace dressed as a maid and goes on an adventure to see the world. When he returns they change clothes and everything goes back to normal. Nobody knows about the arrangement except the prince’s friend, a loyal eunuch who is about the same age as the prince. Meaning he is also a child.

Unfortunately, these innocent children live in a world where ruthless ambitious, and vicious adults also live. While the kids only want to enjoy their innocence and have fun, the corrupt adults want to hold on to power. If holding on to that power means they have to kill an innocent child, they will do it! Without hesitation and without having a guilty conscience that they just snuffed out an innocent child’s life.

The crown princess took drastic desperate measures to save the life of her baby girl when she was born. But years later when those in power find out that the girl is still alive, they set out to kill her again! Only … they mistakenly kill her brother, the prince, who was dressed up like his sister.

When the mother (the crown princess) realizes that her “son” in the palace is actually her daughter and that her son has been killed while outside of the palace … she takes measures that are even more drastic and desperate than what she had done to save the daughter’s life when she was born.

The first episode of this TV series was INTENSE! There was no way anybody could it and not want to follow through all the way to The End.

I finished watching this K-drama TV series and it did not disappoint.

For me, the main takeaway from this series was the relationship between the crown prince, the GIRL who became king, and HER grandfather. Because of the grandfather, the crown prince/king (i.e. the twin girl disguised as her brother) could not really enjoy a loving relationship with HER parents.

This was personal for me because I never got to know my grandparents on my father’s side or my mother’s side. They had passed away by the time I was born. But I can tell you … if I had a grandfather like the king had, I would have changed my identity and run away to another country. That grandpa was scary mean and nasty!!

For the entire series, I think that the old man smiled or laughed once or twice, and even then it was not sincere joy or happiness. But fortunately for the king, SHE had buffers. SHE had loyal friends and loyal servants who were also HER friends. With those people surrounding HER and giving HER their love, loyalty, and support, SHE was able to face the wrath, wickedness, and treachery of HER grandfather, and stand against others who opposed HER.

This Netflix series is 20 episodes and totally binge-worthy.
