K-Drama Review: My Only Love Song (2017 Netflix Original Series)
The historical records indicated that On Dal married the princess. But are the records telling the real true story?
“My Only Love Song” is a Netflix original series and the best way to describe it is fantasy-drama-rom-com-time-travel-sageuk. You can call it a “dramedy” for short. When I first started watching, I initially thought: ‘This is so unbelievably silly!’ Yet I could not stop watching it. LOL.
It’s one of those K-drama time-travel series. An actress who was starring in a fictional historical Korean drama, gets into a van named “Boong Boong” and the van sets the GPS destination and takes her through the time portal where she ends up in a real life historical Korean kingdom.
As an actress, BEFORE she was transported to the past by Boong Boong, the van, Song Soo-jung (played by Gong Seung-yeon) plays the role of Princess Pyunggang. When she travels back through time, she meets Princess Pyunggang (played by Jin Ye-ju), the real Princess of 6th century Goguryeo, the daughter of King Pyeongwon. According to historical records, the princess marries General On Dal.
The problem is: Song Soo-jung meets and falls in love with On Dal; and he falls in love with her. That relationship starts messing up the historical record!
Another problem? What adds to this time-slip complication is the fact that Byun Sam-yong (played by Lee Jae-jin) who is the manager for the actress, and helps her maintain her Top Star celebrity status, was also inside the van when it went back in time. He hides in the van and does not make his presence known until he’s sure it’s safe to come outside. You can’t blame him. If the first thing you saw when you peeked out the window, was how criminals were violently punished for their crimes in Goguryeo, you would not reveal yourself either! Who’s to say you won’t get your head chopped off! (Or ... maybe some other precious part of your anatomy.)
What did I like most about this series that kept me watching? The guys!
- On Dal (played by Lee Jong-hyun) is the main male lead character. You not only instantly like him but you like even more when he disguises himself by wearing a fake moustache. He looks like Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean. LOL.
Then there are the other two guys who are support actors.
- Byun Sam-yong (played by Lee Jae-jin) who looks like such a sweet baby boy. You don’t want anything bad to happen to him.
- Moo-myung (played by Ahn Bo-hyun). He is the humble and loyal bodyguard for the princess, but he is also in love with her. He never talks, yet everybody knows what he’s saying. LOL. To best way to describe him is to borrow a line from Byun Sam-yong: “He looks cool without even trying.”
As for the two leading ladies? Song Soo-jung, the Top Star, (played by Gong Seung-yeon) and Princess Pyunggang (played by Jin Ye-ju). Eh! They were OK. But, in my opinion, it was the guys who actually carried the series through from start to finish. It’s 20 episodes, lots of fun, and you will never guess how it ends!
How would I rate this series? Uuhh … I’d give it two thumbs up!
(If you watch this series, you’ll understand the rating. LOL.)
