Nelly and Ashanti are the Black Love Story Hip-Hop Deserves

I’m cautiously rooting for them…

I might come across as somewhat cynical and jaded about relationships in general, and let’s be clear: I am.

Nevertheless, I still love to see happy couples from all walks of life. This is especially true when dealing with the entertainment industry, an industry that is known for 5-minute relationships and a lack of loyalty overall.

When I first noticed Nelly and Ashanti were hanging out again, I didn’t know if it was for publicity or companionship or if they were truly into each other. However, as time went on, I started to believe that they were truly in love and may have gotten back together. Much to my delight, they have!

Sweet Black Love

Now look, I will say this: my main issue with so-called “Black love” stories is that they are almost always tales of struggle love. I’m not going to lie; this one isn’t much better. Given that Ashanti mentioned “betrayal” in terms of why they broke up initially, I can only surmise that this is due to infidelity. However, I do believe in meeting the right people at the wrong time, and that just may be what happened between Nelly and Ashanti.

Nevertheless, I do believe that men only settle down when they’re ready. When it comes to men in the entertainment industry, I think it takes far longer for them to settle down than men with less money and fewer options.

In this case, I believe that, perhaps, these two will get a happily ever after, or as close to one as you can get in Hollywood. I genuinely think that when couples separate for years and come back together, especially when they have other options, it’s because they genuinely have a connection and love one another.

Pursuit of Happiness

Although I don’t believe men and women can “make each other happy,” I do think that the people we spend our time with can enhance or undermine it.

Just watching Nelly and Ashanti together lately makes me think they are truly enhancing one another’s happiness. They’re out here in coordinated outfits, performing together and grinning from ear to ear.

Just look at this, she has a purse with their faces on it:

And look at these super cute coordinated outfits! It’s giving “real love!” I mean, you’re not getting a man to dress up like a deacon for just anybody.

The Happy Ending We’ve Been Waiting For

Yes, I do realize this relationship could end tomorrow, but I’m honestly wishing the best for them both, especially Ashanti. After the unfair treatment she received as an artist and the ridiculous measures Irv Gotti went to drag her name through the mud while reliving his hay day, I would love to see Ashanti win in all aspects of her life. I totally see wedding bells and even a baby or two (maybe twins) in their future. But let’s not put the carriage before the horse.

It’s certainly not good to live vicariously through others, but with all the trash relationships in Hollywood, I would love to see these two enjoy a happily ever after after all these years. It’s always nice to see people learn from their past mistakes and go on to do better.

So, let’s be clear: I don’t see these two as inspiration or “couple goals.” All I’m saying is that there are so few seemingly healthy Black relationships in the entertainment industry; I would love for Nelly and Ashanti to be an “it couple” and the center of attention for the next 40 years.

Wait, did I mention how great they look both individually and separately?! These two are aging like fine wine, and I’m here for it!

Honestly, I hope they keep the coordinated outfits and cutesy antics up forever.
