Summary

A neighborhood taco stand in Texas uses humor to address the mask controversy in a politically conservative area, while a nearby billboard presents a conflicting message about government roles in health and rights.

Abstract

In a conservative Texas neighborhood, a local taco stand has taken a lighthearted approach to the contentious issue of mask-wearing by posting amusing signs for customers. Despite the humor, the situation highlights the tension between personal freedom and public health, as evidenced by a large billboard nearby that asserts the government's role is to protect rights, not health. This billboard, whose sponsor remains anonymous, stands in stark contrast to the health regulations that restaurants, including those close to the billboard, are required to follow. The author reflects on the irony of the billboard's message, considering the importance of health regulations in the food industry, and expresses gratitude towards the taco stand for its courage and humor in navigating the pandemic's challenges.

Opinions

  • The taco stand's owners are seen as a small, family-owned business making an effort to do the right thing amidst the mask controversy.
  • The author finds it unfortunate that the taco stand felt compelled to use humor to address customers' excuses for not wearing masks.
  • The billboard's message is viewed as contradictory, especially given its proximity to restaurants that operate under local health department codes.
  • The author suggests that the billboard's anonymous sponsor would likely expect government health safeguards when dining out, despite the billboard's assertion that health protection is not the government's job.
  • The author expresses a hope that those responsible for the billboard might reconsider their stance if they experienced food poisoning, implying that government health regulations are indeed necessary.
  • The author is appreciative of the taco stand's resilience and commitment to staying open while making customers smile with their sign, and intends to continue supporting the business.

Neighborhood Taco Stand Made Me Laugh

My neighborhood taco stand in Texas posted a hilarious sign to their customers. This is a politically conservative area where masking has been quite the controversy.

This is a small, family-owned business trying to do the right thing. It is sad that they had to post this sign on the door and inside at the counter, but they addressed the issue with humor. Most likely, they heard these excuses and more.

Contrary to the humor, however, less than a mile down the road is a great enormous billboard I have not stopped to photograph.

“It’s not the government’s job to protect my health.

It is the government’s job to protect my rights.”

The advertiser or sponsor of this billboard did not claim his or her words. Passers-by are left to guess if it was an individual or group.

Considering this billboard is very near several restaurants, it seems a little contradictory.

Cities and counties have local health department codes for food establishments. We count on them inspecting such businesses to protect our health. That is government protecting our health.

Somehow, I want to think this person or group behind the billboard, would not dine at a restaurant if there were no government safeguards in place to protect human health from rodents, flies, dogs in the kitchen, food unsafe for human consumption or stored at an incorrect temperature, employees not handwashing properly, etc.

Maybe a good case of food poisoning would have them re-think their statement on the billboard. Karma, are you listening?

I’m grateful my neighborhood taco shop had the courage to post their sign and make some changes so they can stay open. And for a good laugh at their sign! I will continue to support them with a takeout order now and again.
