Dealing with painful emotions is difficult. It’s often easier to push them to the side. “I’ll deal with you later,” we say, as we keep pushing more and more negative emotions to the side.

Even ignoring just one painful emotion can cause issues with our overall happiness and wellbeing. When we get into the habit of not dealing with our negative emotions, we start to create a new normal. We forget that the meh state we’re in now isn’t how things used to be.

Those negative emotions need to be dealt with. It sucks. It hurts. They can draw blood. If you want to be actually happy though, you have to allow yourself to experience them. A lot of pain now so that you don’t have to experience slowly stacking residual pain.

Just experiencing them and coming to terms with them is so important. If you want to gain more though, analyze your pain as well as you can. Why does this hurt so much? What other emotions are attached to this, what memories?

Make dealing with your pain fruitful in more ways than one. I also think that if you take the time to understand your pain, that will help you to get past it. Here’s a story I wrote not too long ago where I go into more detail on all of this.
