“I’ve used Twitter to attract freelance projects and new clients. I’ve also used it to help boost the visibility of my projects. For example, I was able to secure endorsements from Holly Robinson Peete, Sheryl Underwood, and Yvette Nicole Brown for an advocacy project that I worked on targeting women of color, simply by tweeting them. I’ve been able to get journalists to cover client stories by tweeting them as well. The potential is enormous! It’s my favorite social media platform.” — Ty Mays, owner, Perfect Pitch Public Relations Ty Mays, PR Pro

Like Ty, millions of Twitter users found unimaginable success in achieving their goals. All of that starts with increasing your follower base.

There are over 350 million Twitter users. And guess what, you can reach them to promote your Medium blogs, business, create your personal brand or just develop a group of followers. Let’s have a look at 5 tricks that will help you get there.

Trick 01: Create a Tweeting Routine

You have to tweet more than once every day! As per Coschedule, 15 tweets per day is recommended. If you have to tweet 15 times a day, you will be on your phone all the time. That can’t be the way forward!

How to do it —

  1. Use a Tweet scheduler like Tweetdeck
  • Schedule months of tweets in advance. If you have written a Medium story, you can schedule it for a tweet every month for the next 6 months

2. Follow influencers in your niche — I like cricket so I am following Kevin Pietersen, ABD, Shane Warne, and other cricketers

  • Retweet their tweets — 7 tweets per day
  • Retweet with a quote to add your expertise

3. Use Different types of content

  • Post GIFs, images, infographics with a quote and text
  • Share your articles, YouTube videos, or status
  • Retweet posts from others
  • Create poles to engage with followers

The bottom line is, you don’t have to tweet 15 times. Let the scheduler take care of most of it. You should go in and tweet occasionally. Also, you don’t need to start tweeting so many times today. Follow a pace that works for you.

My Twitter account was inactive for years. In September, I started tweeting almost every day (all pre-scheduled tweets). And guess what happened. Ok, you don’t need to guess. Let’s see what happened —

I started getting more visits, mentions, and followers. I am curious to see what happens if I start tweeting more times a day. I will add more to this story in a month.

Trick 02: Use Hashtags With Care

Ok, I am guilty of overusing hashtags too. But, the recommended approach is to use 1–2 hashtags per post. Have a look at the Dos and Don’ts of Hashtags.

In summary, Twitter asks us to —

  • Use them consistently
  • Make them easy to remember — and spell
  • Do your research
  • Give people a reason to use your hashtag
  • Partner with influencers or followers
  • Use branded hashtags

Publishing with only one hashtag provides the highest exposure. It can be a customized hashtag or you can ride the wave of other popular ones.

How to do it —

  1. Pick a niche
  2. Research what hashtags that niche is using
  3. As you’ll be tweeting multiple times, use different hashtags to see which one performs better
  4. Shortlist the better-performing ones and use them more often

Trick 03: Post at the right time

As per Sproutsocial, the times with the highest engagement are —

The darker the color, the more engagement that time has. Note that Twitter is hugely popular in the USA. That means this data is skewed towards the USA audience and obviously following US times zones.

If you want to cater to a US audience but are tweeting from Europe, adjust the time accordingly.

How to do it?

  • In your scheduler, you should be able to choose a time zone. Choose the time zone you want to target
  • Schedule more tweets during the high engagement periods

Trick 04: Engage with other Twitter users

The ultimate goal is to increase your own engagement and follower numbers. But you have to give back to the pool before receiving from it. Twitter will also reward you if you spend time on the platform actively.

How to do it —

  • Follow users and hashtags you are interested in
  • If someone follows you, acknowledge him or her
  • If you like a tweet, you can add a react, comment or retweet it

Additional note: Twitter published an official note to share what guides engagement.

Trick 05: Optimize your profile

You need to add carefully planned details to your profile unless you are Robert Downey Jr.

Even RDJ uses a clean image, a contrasting banner, and a link.

How to do it —

  1. In the description, mention who you are. It doesn’t have to be descriptive. Think of this as your 30-second elevator pitch. Why should others follow you?
  2. Add a link to your website, business, social media, or blog
  3. Use a clear profile picture with less noise
  4. Use a contrasting banner that goes with your brand image

Bonus Tip

Thanks to Rebirth of The Dad for this one —

Join an engagement group of 4–5 people. When someone posts, like the tweet immediately and retweet if possible. The algorithm loves this.

Final Thoughts

To summarize, you have to post on Twitter regularly, use hashtags strategically, tweet during the right hours, engage with others and utilize profile space to introduce yourself.

Best of luck with getting more followers! If you continue it, results will start showing.
