Summary

The website content describes "Nature's Alarm Clock," a daily drabble challenge centered around the random word "harassed," illustrating a woman's preference for noisy birds over previous human disturbances.

Abstract

The narrative titled "Nature's Alarm Clock" is a creative writing exercise known as a drabble, which is a story exactly 100 words in length. The piece uses the word "harassed" to depict Candace, a character who is awakened by the cacophony of a blue jay and later reflects on the nuisance of birds in springtime. Despite the birds' racket, she concludes that their natural noise is preferable to the disruptive sounds of her former neighbors, such as loud parties and blaring radios. The website also explains that writing a drabble is a challenging yet enjoyable exercise that requires precise word choice to meet the 100-word limit, and invites readers to participate in the daily drabble challenge by providing guidelines through a linked article.

Today’s random word is — harassed

A screeching blue jay jolted Candace awake. She groaned, rolled over and attempted to settle back into sleep mode.

The jay kept up its racket.

After that mockingbird sang outside my window last night too. I may as well get up.

Later, when she stepped outside to leave for work, she interrupted chattering sparrows clustered in her flower bed.

As Candance started to grumble to herself about the birds filled with spring fever, she remembered the neighbors she used to have.

Loud parties. Radios blaring. Car engines revving.

Never mind. I’d rather be harassed by the noisy birds any day.

What is a drabble, you ask?

A drabble is a 100-word story. EXACTLY 100 words.

It’s not as easy as it looks though. It really makes you play with words to come up with an exact word count for a story, even as short as 100 words.

But it sure is a lot of fun to do as it stretches our writer’s muscles a little bit.

If you want to play along with the daily drabble prompts, here’s the guidelines for the daily challenge.
