Summary

The article discusses the challenges faced when a generous gift of papaya plants leads to overcrowding and nutritional deficiencies, prompting a reflection on the principles of natural selection.

Abstract

The author recounts the unexpected receipt of papaya plants from a neighbor, which initially seemed like a blessing. However, the unchecked growth of these plants has resulted in stunted fruit development and yellowing leaves due to limited space and nutrients. This situation illustrates the concept of natural selection, where the environment's capacity to support life leads to a survival-of-the-fittest scenario. The author ponders whether human intervention, by thinning out the plants, could restore balance and allow some trees to thrive.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that early intervention, such as removing some plants, might have prevented the current overcrowding issue.
  • There is a sense of regret for not anticipating the consequences of allowing all the plants to grow without restriction.
  • The author recognizes nature's role in enforcing balance through the process of natural selection, acknowledging that what nature provides, it can also reclaim.
  • A contemplative stance is taken on whether to interfere with nature's course by selectively reducing the number of plants to benefit the remaining ones.

Nature Takes Back What It Gives

A story of natural selection

Author’s Photo

A few weeks ago, I shared a story about how we received an unexpected gift from the boy next door: a cluster of papaya plants.

Today, I observed something strange. The growth of the papaya plants has decreased, and most of the leaves started to turn yellow, and the fruits are also becoming smaller.

The reason for this is simple: too many plants and not enough nutrition and space. Perhaps we should have removed a few plants early on and left only a couple at the beginning. We couldn’t decide to do that looking at those tiny flowers.

So they grew freely. However, nature has decided it is against the order, and natural selection has prevailed. What nature gives, it can also take away.

Should we reduce the excessive ones and allow some trees to grow freely?
