Summary

The provided website content is an article inviting readers to engage with the concept of "fairy rings" — circular formations of mushrooms associated with folklore — by creating a written or artistic work.

Abstract

The article, titled "Natural Thought Prompt #7," introduces the natural phenomenon of fairy rings: rings of mushrooms commonly found in forests and sometimes grasslands, often marked by a central patch of dead grass due to the depletion of nutrients. These rings, which can be classified as "tethered" in woodlands as they are connected to mycorrhizal fungi of trees, or "free" in meadows where they stand alone, have inspired a wealth of folklore, especially in English, Celtic, and German traditions involving fairies and witches. The article challenges its audience to produce a piece of work inspired by the prompt, emphasizing fiction but open to poetry, essays, or articles, and encourages tagging the author (@rosierosebtr3) and @ravynehawke for potential newsletter features.

Opinions

  • The article conveys a sense of enchantment and mystique surrounding fairy rings, suggesting they are rich subjects for creative exploration.
  • It encourages an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of fairy rings, appealing to writers, poets, and artists alike.
  • The author demonstrates a preference for fiction as a medium for this prompt but remains inclusive of other forms of expression.
  • There is an emphasis on community and feedback within the creative process by asking participants to tag the author and a second account for broader exposure and commentary.
  • By mentioning earlier content touching on mycorrhizal fungi, the author implies a continuation of a thematic narrative across multiple prompts, suggesting a larger, ongoing exploration of natural phenomena and their cultural implications.

The prompt: What can you think up regarding fairy rings?

A fairy ring is a natural circle of mushrooms that grow mainly in forested areas, but they can grow in grasslands too. There’s usually a center of dead grass within the circle, caused by the depletion of nutrients that were used up in the creation of the fairy ring.

Fairy rings are created as a result of an individual fungus growing underground. Fairy rings found in the woods are tethered rings because they form from the mycorrhizal fungi that live with trees. (I touched on this in an earlier prompt!) Fairy rings that grow in meadows are free rings since they don’t connect with anything.

There’s a lot of folklore attached to these natural phenomena. English and Celtic folklore tell the stories of fairies dancing in the forest, while German folklore focuses on witches.

I want you to create a piece of work based on the idea of fairy rings. It doesn’t have to be a fiction story, but bonus points if it is!

  1. Write any kind of piece based on the prompt above!
  2. Make sure your first tag is either “Fiction,” “Poetry,” “Essay,” or “Article,” depending on what it is!
  3. Tag me at the end of your piece (@rosierosebtr3), so I can read your response and comment on it!
  4. If you publish your piece outside of Promptly Written, be sure to tag @ravynehawke as well so she can view your post and mention it in our newsletters.
