Natural Thought Prompt #3

Colors in a Tundra

Prompt #3: How does one find the colors in an environment like the frozen tundra or sandy desert?

This week’s prompt is a little less scientific and a little more whimsical. I want to focus on colors this week. Let’s find colors in a monochromatic environment.

Everyone thinks of the desert as endless sand and the frozen tundra as endless ice. There’s no variation, no life, no color. Well, that’s not true! Kind of. Even in these places, life and color still exist, you just have to go looking for them. Open your eyes and search.

Animals that thrive in these biomes often adapt their fur/skin/scales to match the ground, such as my favorites, the arctic fox and the fennec fox. Predators and prey alike have their reasons to blend into the background, but what about flora?

Take a look at the desert larkspur. A beautiful blue flower that blooms in North American deserts, it breaks the idea of monochrome.

Just think about the flora and fauna of the desert or the tundra, and their adaptations for surviving and thriving. How does color come into play? What about other factors, such as size?

Your prompt: find the colors in what you think is a barren place. Write about them.
