Opinions

  • The number 13 is widely disliked in India, with people taking measures to avoid it, such as renaming a house numbered 13 to 14.
  • Despite some considering it lucky, number 13 is generally seen as a harbinger of bad luck, a belief that extends beyond India, as seen in Ireland and the absence of a 13th floor in some buildings.
  • Number 8 is increasingly viewed as unlucky, influencing real estate decisions, as confirmed by numerologists Anupam Kapil and Prem Kumar.
  • The number 420 is negatively perceived due to its legal connotation with cheating and dishonesty, as well as its cultural association with cannabis consumption.
  • Number 9211 is used idiomatically in Hindi to describe someone who has absconded or run away, often in the context of theft or romantic betrayal.
  • Number 786 is considered highly auspicious, with its roots in the Arabic "Abjad system" and its numerical value corresponding to "Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem," also resonating with the spiritual 'Aum' in Hinduism.

Number game in people’s lives

In India, people believe a lot that there are some numbers that are very lucky and some that should be avoided at all costs because they bring bad luck.

In India, numbers 13, 8, 420 9211, and 786 have their own stories to tell.

Number 13

The number 13 is not liked by people at all. Where I live in New Delhi, there are 50 homes, nice bungalows. A person who bought 13 has named it 14 and the original no 14 is now 14A. He thinks 13 is unlucky so he requested a change in number.

I was just trying to do some research on numbers in other countries and found that in Ireland also number 13 is not considered lucky though it has brought luck to some people.

A high rise building in Gurugram in Haryana in India does not have the 13th floor at all. I found in a newspaper that in several buildings a whole floor is not numbered 13 because it is considered unlucky.

A friend of mine told me that she would never invite 13 guests to her house for dinner.

Another person told me that the spiritual meaning of number 13 is death or suffering.

Despite the number 13 not finding favor with people, it is lucky for some people and they believe in it as a good sign. However, it is not accepted by most people.

Number 8

The number 8 is not as strong or as unlucky as number 13 but of late it is getting a bad name.

One fine day a friend came to see me. She was looking for an apartment as she wanted to shift to a bigger place that she lived in. She told me that she had seen several apartments close to my home as she would be able to visit me and other friends living in this locality.

She liked one apartment a lot and it met all her requirements but her husband and parents-in-law did not want to buy it because it was no 8.

I was astonished. “What has no 8 got to do with it”? I asked. She replied that no one buys a number 8 property. It is very unlucky. Then I did some research and found from a newspaper that indeed No8 was considered unlucky. Numerologists Anupam Kapil and Prem Kumar think that indeed number 8 brings bad luck.

Number 420

The number 420 in India is associated with cheating and forgery. Bollywood has made movies depicting the character as 420 which means a villainous person.

Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code covers offences relating to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, and leads to punishments of fines and/or jail terms of up to 7 years.

420 also refers to cannabis culture. It is celebrated on 20th April every year at 4.20 PM. It is marijuana and hashish consumption. ( A full description is given in Wikipedia)

The number 9211 is an idiom in the Hindi language that means to run away. (Nau do gyara in Hindi or 9211in English)

Another manner in which it is used is that a person is romantically inclined and he quietly runs away cheating her, it can be said that he has quietly gone out of her life after becoming 9211.
