Sanskrit is a language with a history of 3500 years. Artificial Intelligence is the latest technology. Every company is exploring AI products to improve customer experience.

Is it possible to merge ancient languages with a rich intellectual history with a technology that can change the world’s face?

This question came into limelight in 1985. When scientist Rick Briggs published his article entitled “Vedic Science — Knowledge Representation in Sanskrit and Artificial Intelligence.”

Why is Sanskrit considered suitable for Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial languages such as Java, Python, Lisp, Prolog, and C++ are used to write an artificial intelligence algorithm. Research is also going on for Natural Language Processing (NLP). The goal of NLP is, computers can understand and communicate in human language.

Out of all the natural languages, Sanskrit was best suited for this purpose. The reason was its rich grammatical tradition.

The Indian grammarian Panini from the 4th century BCE has written Sanskrit grammar. He created 3, 959 rules of Sanskrit grammar. These rules are divided into eight chapters, and it is called as Ashtadhyayi. It was the most intellectual achievement of any ancient civilization. It was the most detailed and scientific grammar composed in any part of the world before the 19th century.

For a computer to understand human language, unambiguous representation is necessary. It means if one word in natural language has several meanings, it becomes cumbersome. In such a case, a machine with artificial intelligence will not understand it.

Rick Briggs praised the detailed and scientific structure of Sanskrit grammar, which makes it suitable for artificial intelligence.

His view from his article is mentioned below:

“There is at least one language, Sanskrit, which for the duration of almost 1,000 years was a living spoken language with a considerable literature of its own. Besides works of literary value, there was a long philosophical and grammatical tradition that has continued to exist with undiminished vigor until the present century. Among the accomplishments of the grammarians can be reckoned a method for paraphrasing Sanskrit in a manner that is identical not only in essence but in form with current work in Artificial Intelligence.”

Summary

For more than 20 years, research is being carried out on this topic at NASA. But NASA has never given any official statement about this research.

Indian President Shri Ram Nath Kovind also addresses at 17th conference of the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in New Delhi about Sanskrit and Artificial Intelligence connection.

He said that “Many scholars believe that the grammar of Sanskrit, which is rule-bound, formula-bound and logical, is the most appropriate to write algorithms, or to be used in machine learning and even artificial intelligence,”

This research is honoring the Ancient Indo-Aryan language Sanskrit. If the scientist succeeds in their study, it will be fantastic to see a machine programmed with natural language and communicating in Sanskrit.
