My World Crumbled When My Ex-Husband Showed Me a Message After Our Divorce
My name is Christine, and I’m 40 years old. I was a housewife. My ex-husband, Jackson, is 44 and an architect.
We were married for 15 years and have two children, a son and a daughter. Our marriage seemed happy on the surface, but in reality, it was riddled with problems.
My in-laws were frail and sickly, and I took care of them for over ten years. Three years ago, my father-in-law passed away, and last year, my mother-in-law followed. I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, while Jackson remained indifferent and uninvolved, like a bystander in his own family.
I couldn’t bear his constant aloofness and the overwhelming burden of family responsibilities, so I resolutely asked Jackson for a divorce. To my surprise, he readily agreed.
As we walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau after finalizing the divorce, Jackson showed me a message that instantly shattered my heart.
It was a chat log between Jackson and a woman named Martina.
From the messages, I discovered that Jackson had been having an affair for over three years, and the woman was my best friend, Martina! They had even planned to get married and have children.
Their words were filled with malice, mocking my naivety and ignorance. They called me a useless, haggard housewife who only knew how to slave away at home, incapable of taking care of myself or enjoying life.
Jackson said he had long been tired of living with me and only endured it for the sake of the children and appearances. He said he couldn’t wait to get rid of me, a burden, and start a new life with Martina.
Reading those words felt like being struck by lightning. My mind went blank, and my heart ached with excruciating pain.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, couldn’t believe my ex-husband and best friend would betray me like this.
How could they hurt me so deeply? Were they even human?
I wanted to scream at them, curse them, and cry my heart out. But I couldn’t say or do anything.
I could only stare numbly at the intimate photos and sweet words exchanged between Jackson and Martina, feeling my world crumble around me.
Seeing my expression, Jackson said coldly, “Christine, do you think I don’t know what you’re thinking? You thought asking for a divorce would make me change my mind?
You thought you could find a better man after leaving me? You’re wrong, completely wrong. You don’t deserve to be my wife; you’re only fit to be my unpaid maid.”
He continued, “Christine, stop deceiving yourself. Our marriage has long been devoid of love, only responsibility and habit remained.
Our family hasn’t been happy for a long time, only coldness and conflict. We’re not a family anymore, just strangers sharing a space. We should have divorced a long time ago, but I could never bring myself to say it.”
Finally, he said, “Christine, from today onwards, we have nothing to do with each other. We’re strangers now, never to meet or contact each other again. I will send you child support on time.
I will start my life anew, and I hope you can do the same, find your happiness again…”
After saying this, he turned and left, leaving me standing alone at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, lost and confused.
And so, my 15-year marriage ended, my love died, and my family was broken.
Scenes from the past flashed through my mind like a movie.
I used to be a career woman, but I sacrificed my career for Jackson’s, willingly becoming a housewife, bearing him two children, and taking care of his ailing parents.
Now that the children were grown and his parents were gone, he abandoned his wife and children without a second thought, without any remorse… It was heartless.
I entrusted the children to my parents for a while and hailed a taxi, telling the driver to take me to the train station.
I decided to leave this city, this place that brought me so much pain. I wanted to go somewhere new, heal my wounds, and find a new me.
In the car, I opened my phone and deleted all photos and messages related to Jackson. I sent him a text message saying, “Goodbye forever. I wish you happiness.”
Then, I deleted his number too. I didn’t want any further contact with him. I thought this would be a liberation for both of us.
At the train station, I bought a ticket to Tibet. I wanted to see the scenery and culture there, experience its mystery and tranquility, visit the Potala Palace and Mount Everest, and feel the faith and magnificence of the place…
On the train, I closed my eyes, and everything about my past with my ex-husband replayed in my mind. I thought about Jackson and Martina’s betrayal, about my children, and the shattering of my family.
I was filled with sadness and loss. I knew this was my fate, my choice. I couldn’t change the past or predict the future; I could only accept the present.
When I returned from Tibet, my ex-husband came to me, asking to remarry.
It turned out that Martina had played him. She never intended to marry him; she just wanted him to lose me. I thought to myself, karma came around quickly.
I didn’t agree to remarry him. As the saying goes: ‘A good cow doesn’t return to eat the grass behind it.’ Besides, Jackson is not any good grass. Without him, I believe I will live a better and happier life.
Life is full of changes and challenges. There are no “what ifs” in life, only the courage to face it head-on. Always maintain a pure, kind, simple, and peaceful heart. This is the extraordinary within the ordinary.
