My Vow to Self-Love

It is important to love yourself.
I’m not talking about being “full of yourself”or acting superior or conceited.
I’m not talking about “Oh, I love my hair” or “I love my eyes when I wear purple.” I’m talking about loving every part of you. I’m talking about loving your flaws, past, mistakes, your stretch marks.
I’m talking about valuing yourself. Knowing your worth. Embracing you for who you are.
Loving every bit of you.
Love yourself more than somebody’s reluctance to live up to his or her full potential.
Love yourself more than somebody’s empty promises and lack of fulfilling actions.
Love yourself more than the family member that has abandoned you on more than one occasion when you needed him most, and you keep giving him too many chances to redeem himself.
Love yourself more than the job that keeps putting more and more on your plate without giving you that well-deserved promotion or salary increase.
Love yourself more than the negative words that society feeds us about what we should look like and what we should be doing.
Love yourself.
Here is a poem I wrote inspired by the self-love and worth that I learned to have for myself. It took me a long time to be proud of who I am.
I Love Myself
I love myself
in sickness and in health
Through my poorest and in my future wealth
I love my bi-racial race
Even with the discrimination I face
I love my short, full-figure because it embodies my strength
I love my big, bleeding heart because I will go at length
For the ones I care about and deeply love
I love my lessons learned that I am not above
Or below others. I love how I don’t fit in
Because denying my true self is a sin
I love my challenging past and life’s mistakes
I love my real, honest-nature, I’m not among the fakes
I love my uniqueness, character, and deep thought
I love my determination, and adversities I fought
Because now, I can share it with what I write
I love my healing because my burden is light
I love my difficult experiences and point of view
Because it brings resonance and healing to you
