My Trick To a Magical Morning: Iskiate
How an Indigenous Mexican mixture allows me to move mountains
I am the fattest health nut on the planet.
As a flexitarian and avid nut muncher, I try to stay away from processed food as much as possible. I know that if I have one hotdog; I am going to want 4. It is just who I am.
I also like the idea of running, I used to actually be pretty good at it, before I gained 80 pounds. When COVID started, I decided that I would get back into running shape, so I found some books that were running oriented. The one that stuck with me the most was Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.
In this book, McDougall describes his interactions with the Tarahumara people who dwell in the Copper Canyons of Mexico. These people are a running people and running is deeply ingrained in their culture. They run for 50, 60, and 70 miles just for fun, like it is nothing.
As inspiring as this story was, what really stuck with me was their diet. The Tarahumara survived on chia seeds, corn, and the occasional chicken. It was a very simple diet.
In particular, McDougal talks about a mixture called iskiate. By consuming iskiate, The Tarahumara runners could keep their energy high and stay hydrated throughout the day.
I had to try it. Here is the recipe I found.
Iskiate Recipe
It couldn’t be more simple.
- 8–16 ounces of cold water.
- 2 tablespoons of chia seeds.
- Juice from one lime.
- 1 tablespoon agave nectar.
Put them all together and mix well. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, so that the chia can absorb the water (you can drink it right away, but I prefer to wait). I actually use a mason jar with a sealed lid and shake it.
This isn’t a hard and fast recipe, you can play with the ratios to get it as you like.
Iskiate Benefits
Iskiate has many health benefits, the Tarahumara could hydrate with iskiate and run all day. However, there are many other benefits to iskiate that make it a good addition to any diet.
All-natural energy boost
The thing that I like about it the most is the boost of energy that I get. Chia seeds are packed with calories, fiber, protein, and other nutrients. The agave gives a quick burst of energy that is then sustained by the chia. The lime juice provides some vitamin C, but in reality, it is just there for the flavor.
When I drink iskiate I feel alert and ready for the day. I still drink coffee, but my energy boost is less jittery and more sustained. As a teacher who needs to be up and at-them early in the morning, iskiate has done wonders for my early morning teaching. I have the energy that I need to be lively and engaging.
Hydration
Drinking this first thing in the morning is a great way to feel hydrated and start your day off with some healthy liquid. Also, when compared to energy drinks that are high in caffeine, iskiate is a much better option to get a quick energy burst.
Better Digestion
The chia seeds in this drink also help with digestion. They have a ton of fiber and help to keep things moving through your bowels smoothly.
Try it!
I have been using this stuff for the better part of a year, and while I could not lose a ton of weight as a result, I have been able to remove about half of my coffee intake, and I feel much more alert. My next step is to add in running.
The best part about iskiate is that it is so easy to make and try that if you end up not liking it, you can simply stop drinking it and use your chia seeds to grow some pretend hair.
