My Top 5 Writing Tips for Medium
July 2020 Edition
#1 Keep Your Content Short
Yes, I know top writers write about 6 to 7 minutes, but they have a huge fan following, who are also ready to read 30 minutes article from their favorite writers. And a kind reminder, you are not yet famous. So, medium readers usually read random content that are maximum of 4 minutes.(Trust me, try this for 1 or 2 articles and see the results. Thank me later.)
#2 Don’t Ask Readers to follow you.
I have done the same mistake for a couple of my articles, I asked people to follow me at the end of article. It never worked. I gained 0 followers by this method. People usually follow me, if they like my content, and they want to read more. And let me tell you that 1 Real follower = 1K fake followers (Gained By Many Methods, like follow unfollow.)
Trust me, When a reader opens your profile page to find more exciting content, you are earning respect from him. Following you is his personal interest and should not be forced. Correct me if I am wrong.
#3 Please Write Quality, Over quantity.
If a popular publication ask for 7 minute of content and you have written only 3 minutes of content, don’t start filling that extra 4 minutes. They want a quality seven minutes and you have just 3 minute of quality content.
The Best way to deal with this is to write only on topics you have knowledge about. I can’t write about biology, because I have no Idea about it. But, I can write hours of quality content on Artificial Intelligence, Motivation, Personal Development and of course writing.
# 4 Medium is not Your Journal
Please don’t treat medium as your personal Journal, No random reader want to read about your life or your trip to China.
As said by many top writers like Ayodeji Awosika, Don’t think that people will love you just because you have a life to share about. Only write about topics which can really help people by any means.
But, you are interested to write about your favorite shoes then, Write it in Notepad or Microsoft Word and save it in your computer only. Realize the fact that people read only useful stuff on Medium.
#5 Lastly, Use Proper Title and Subtitle
If you wrote about topic like hate, give a proper Title regarding your content. Don’t end up giving clickbait titles or fake titles. Mostly, 99.9% readers in this entire universe will end up exiting your article in 1 sec after moment they notice your fake content with a fake title. Some readers can also report your article on medium and you can end up getting a short span ban.
So, please use only Proper Title and Subtitle that actually resembles your content. If a reader is interested in your topic, he or she will surely read entire article. Also, they can appreciate your article by clapping it.
Lastly, don’t stress up over useless things while writing on medium. Writing is an art and you should keep writing about topics you love. Don’t keep worrying about views, followers or money on medium, keep writing quality content and let the readers of medium decide fate of your article. Trust me, Apple founder Steve Jobs never focused on selling huge quantity of MacBook, He focused only on quality that a buyer will get and rest is the history.
