My Three Days at IEEE-KHM
The biggest take away of being part of IEEE is being able to take part in events and programmes. These programmes are meant to enhance our inner you. It was my privilege to be the delegate of the IEEE Kochi Hub Meet that took place in July (20,21,22).
It has already been 3 months since it was held. I am taking the glimpse of the same as I complete one successful year as an IEEE member and to commemorate the IEEE day celebrations this year.
Ever since its poster came up in the Whatsapp, I wanted to go for the same, so I also decided to be the Publicity Volunteer for the Same. So I applied online for the same and was added to the Group.
There I met Amal J Nellikan, the Event Manager and Sahil Sameer, Kochi Hub head and MEC SB head. I never knew that Sahil was a big personality in the IEEE Kerala section until then.
There was a big hype on the same event, with over 5 Awesome Speakers and 4 Workshops.
I had a big-time confusion on which workshop I should take. Finally, I thought that this event is run under IEEE guidance, then I will surely go for a technical one.
I already got information from my friend that we have over 20 delegates from MEC itself. So, I called my School friend Aaromal also to join me as well. He never knew about IEEE and KHM before, so everything was more new to him.
On the 20 Friday, I reached Vytila and there I met a lot of delegates waiting for the Bus to Toc H College, which was the main venue of the same. Aaromal and his friend Arjun also joined me. At 4 we reached the venue, got registered and waited for the Inaugural ceremony. C. Balagopal was the Chief Guest of the day. After that, we went into a gigantic hall, where we have had an icebreaker session and played a couple of games. There was a campfire, cake cutting and flying lanterns as well before having dinner and check-in to the hostel for sleeping.
Next day we woke up to for the exciting day with Workshops, Speakers and DJ night. Morning session and afternoon session was mainly solely devoted for workshops, namely LiFi, Wordpress, Managerial, and Django. I chose LiFi as I felt that it suited better for me. I also had a long time quest to try some hands-on, and also brush up my knowledge of Electronics. The guest lecturers from Neo Green Labs, Kochi a much-renowned Company known for teaching electronics practicals to students. Unlike the theory lecture, they also made us do a lot of working by ourselves. As the lecture proceeded, we were asked to design circuits and program its working with Audrino(A language for embedded electronics) with the help of an Audrino Board.
As our learning progressed I came to know that, LiFi was more about programming than circuit building, where my class 12 lessons on OOPs, Boolean Algebra, Binary numbers etc came for use. For people who don’t know what LiFi, It is the abbreviation of Light Fidelity. It a method of communication by using visible light. The light source we used was LED and the light detector used was LDR. We made LiFi circuits of communication within a PC, and communication between two PCs. This workshop was conducted under the guidance of ComSoc. I enjoyed the time learning something totally new and different.
After the workshop, we had the talk of two inspirational speakers- Atul Warrier and Little Chef Kicha. Atul Warrier is a passionate traveller who went on solo trips to countries worldwide on his bike. Kicha as everyone calls him is a chef at a young age who learned cooking at the age of 3. He has got recognition in top TV shows in the world.
After inspiring talks we had game time and later we all assembled in the hall, where we had much awaited DJ night. Later on, the meeting was concluded for the night.
Next day, we all woke up to the last and final day of the event, a sad moment for everyone. The day began with Breakfast followed by talks. The main highlighted talk was by RJ Neena who spoke more about how do deal with the problems in our lives. It was followed by Maneesha Paniker, a successful woman entrepreneur who built a resort in one of the remote islands in backwaters, educated the locals and was a success in running it.
The last talk of the event was by Mr Ranjith Nair who spoke about the importance of IEEE as an organisation and about the Joy of Volunteering. He also motivated non-IEEE students to take up membership as well. The talk session was followed by a Feedback session where one person from each college was requested to come forward and give a constructive feedback and suggestions for KHM 2018. We also had a group photo session later-on.
After lunch, everyone dispersed from the event by talking back a lot of memories of the three days spent together. The bus drove us from the campus back to Vytilla Hub. The whole event was a fun-filled one with a lot of networking and learning experience.
I thank all the organisers of the event and volunteers for the wonderful event they had put up. Not to mention the names of Amal, Sahil and Akash who were the heart and soul of the KHM. Toc-H college had been an awesome venue for the same and it was a privilege for the delegates that they had tried to put up the best of their efforts to keep us happy. The volunteers were too much caring for our hospitality that they sacrificed their comforts for us. I look forward to more events of IEEE where I will get a better learning experience like this. I would like to suggest to include more technical/learning aspect into this event, like a hands-on experience or a quiz etc. Not to mention that the food was grand and delicious. As a vegetarian, I was comfortable with the choices they kept for us in mind as well. The Neo Green Labs was an awesome partner in taking me through a journey the future technology.
Last but not least all thanks to the IEEE Kerala link team for the smooth and punctual conduct of the programme.
