Four Things I Learned While Writing for Medium
After publishing over 150 stories on Medium, I have learned a few things.

When I started writing on Medium, I felt like everything had to be perfect, in-depth, and thoroughly researched. No silly fluff pieces. I thought having a serious mindset would make people take me seriously as a writer. I thought that to get a full-time job in the writing field, I had to write full-time for Medium.
But after publishing more than 150 stories here, I learned to value my passion for writing over the income from it. Here are four of my discoveries.
I love to read and write stories that come from the heart.
I love stories that are honest, heartfelt, and often funny — stories that show a writer’s personality! If I can feel another writer’s passion and emotions, I am hooked! Creative nonfiction, romantic flash fiction, poetry, and self-help are my favorites. My preferred length is anywhere from two to eight-minute reads. But if the title and content hold my attention, I will read longer stories.
For me, writing consistently requires passion.
Writing and publishing stories every day (and sometimes every week) requires passion and hard work! I have not published a story in over a week because I am on vacation. Even though I have been having a blast, I have missed writing! So I am writing this piece at 3:30 a.m….five hours before I have to check out of the hotel. That’s how much I have missed writing!
Every once in a while, I edit and/or delete stories after they have been published.
There are times when I read over what I wrote in the past and just…hate it. I try not to dwell on it, but it’s hard! Deleting a story will decrease my story quantity. Editing a story will take time (sometimes too much of it.) But I want to make sure it is honest and that any sensitive information is ethical. For instance, if I write about someone else, I don’t want to ruin their reputation. And if I feel too exposed, I will delete a story from Medium and save it in a Word document. Authenticity is important, but so is my comfort level.
I use Medium as a place to express myself and become inspired by others.
This platform is full of publications that encourage writers to be themselves and gain inspiration! Some of my favorite publications include:
Lately, I have been reading a lot of intriguing stories and poems by Nancy Blackman, MASF, Christine Graves, Som Dutt, and Bill Abbate. (Those are not the only writers I enjoy! There are many others, whom I will mention in future stories).
I will write more stories about my thoughts on writing. But for now, I’ll leave you with this: If you want to write to inspire others, be yourself! Write about what you love. And enjoy the process. Also, remember that if you think other writers are “better” than you, someone else might be thinking the same thing about you. But it doesn’t matter. We are unique; we are learning and evolving.
