My Sydney Lockdown So Far

Pictures of how I’ve been spending the past few weeks in lockdown.

Since moving from New Zealand to Australia in July (2021), my family and I have been on lockdown.

And while it is by no means an ideal situation to find yourself in, I count myself somewhat lucky.

Because even though the state of New South Wales has pretty much come to a standstill with COVID infecting hundreds of people by the day, I’m thankful my friends and family have remained safe, we have access to fresh food and water and we can still venture outdoors to exercise — as long as we stay within a 5–10km radius of our home and apply common sense with regards to COVID safety.

So, taking into account the government guidelines and keen to make the most of the fantastic weather — 20–25°C (70–80°F approx.) ain’t too shabby for winter — we have spent most days going for walks and exploring our local surroundings.

Below are just some of the sights we are blessed to have on our doorstep. They have made dealing with these challenging times a little less tedious.

Jamison Park is a ten-minute walk from our house and a place I frequent almost daily.

Although the grass may be a little brown and uninviting at the moment— due to the warm weather and little rainfall — Jamison Park boasts an air of tranquillity.

With its wide-open spaces and peaceful surroundings, it’s the perfect place to escape the pressures of life and have a little one-on-one time with your thoughts.

The bridge-to-bridge loop is a 7km walk that I complete once per week.

I like to start at the Yandhai Nepean Crossing end and make my way around the trail — if you look closely in the image above you can see the other bridge in the distance.

It’s a walk that usually takes us an hour or two as there are a few play parks along the way which the kids like to stop at.

It’s a fairly flat and smooth walk so pushing a buggy is not an issue — great for when the kids need a rest from all the playing, running and walking.

No Australian walk would be complete without the ‘threat’ of snakes.

Having access to such beautiful sights and scenes over the past few weeks has been a godsend.

Dealing with the stresses of a COVID lockdown is never easy and at times the uncertainty of it all can really get you down.

But by keeping a positive mindset, eating right, staying well hydrated and getting out in nature to exercise as often as possible we have been able to endure these challenging times a little easier.

They say nothing lasts forever and eventually we will make it through the madness of COVID.

So, until that day comes, all we can do is keep our heads up, stay safe and do what we can to look after our mental and physical health.
