My 5-Year Story of Crafting My Voice and Building a Personal Brand
The ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, and the lessons learned
It all started back in 2018 when I was sitting in my dimly lit office in Hamburg, staring blankly at my computer screen.
I had just finished long hours of coding and was feeling a bit burned out. But something inside me was stirring.
I always had a passion to connect with the broader world, and not being limited by my narrow, close professional environment.
I knew that my expertise as a software engineer could be valuable to other developers out there, and I wanted to share it with as many people as possible.
Fueled by the inspiration I gleaned from reading stories that truly spoke to me, and emboldened by my past experience of publishing two articles in the German tech newspaper “Java Magazin” in 2014 and 2016, I couldn’t help but think to myself “Maybe I can do that too.”
With eager fingers, I navigated to Medium’s website and clicked the “Write a story” button, ready to pour my ideas onto the blank page and craft the next masterpiece.
Though putting my thoughts down on paper (or, well, on the screen) was daunting, and I was skeptical about the quality of the content, I couldn’t contain my excitement as I hit the “publish” button and unleashed my mediocre musings upon the world.
The Branding Gym: A Journey of Hurdles and Hilarity
Building a personal brand as a content creator is more than just creating and publishing content. It’s about creating a reputation, an identity, and a following that is associated with your name, your voice, and your message.
It’s about creating an image that is unique to you and that sets you apart from the crowd.
And it’s about creating a connection with a loyal community of people who go beyond just reading or watching your pieces to share your ideas, give you constructive feedback, and trust you.
The road to building this personal brand was not without its own set of challenges for me.
During the next three years, I learned that writing was a bit like going to the gym — it’s hard to get motivated at first, but once you’re there, you’re glad you made the effort. And just like going to the gym, I had to work on my English language skills — it’s my third language, and I wasn’t fluent when I started.
And let’s not forget, I’m an introvert with a background of being very shy, so putting myself out there and sharing my personal stories wasn’t always comfortable.
But, I’ll be honest, consistency was my real enemy. I was like a yo-yo, publishing just 5 articles on Medium between 2018 and 2019. Then, I made a New Year’s resolution to up my game, and in 2020, I published 24 articles, and in 2021, I published 78 articles.
In 2022, I was back at my full-time job as a freelance software engineer, but I didn’t let that stop me from flexing my writing and filming muscles. I managed to publish 16 articles and added 11 new videos to my YouTube channel.
Another challenge I faced on my journey as a content creator was not having a specific niche. I love dabbling in a variety of subjects, from software engineering and entrepreneurship to leadership, writing techniques, and even some creative pieces. I don’t like to be confined to a box, and I wanted to overcome my struggle with consistency as a writer and hone my craft before narrowing my focus to any niche.
That decision allowed me to expand my horizons and learn more about writing styles and tones.

With persistence and determination, my content started to gain traction and reach 40K and even 60K views per piece. And it’s all thanks to the support and encouragement of my audience and friends.
Fast forward to January 18th, 2023, and the fruits of my labor were clear to see. My Medium profile had amassed 540K views, and I had built 5K+ followers:


And to top it all off, the pennies as monthly income transformed to over $600 and $300 per piece:


Expanding My Reach: Branching Out
In 2021, I decided to branch out and start publishing videos on YouTube. I wanted to have a more visual presence, and it was a great way to learn more about the art of voiceover and video editing. Plus, it was a fun new challenge.
And it worked! Today, my YouTube channel has over 1K subscribers.

In the same year, I also gave a talk about web performance at the enterJS conference. In January 2022, I published my first Udemy video course about identifying and fixing memory leaks in web apps, which has over 14K students.
And on November 2023, I become a Women Techmakers (WTM) Ambassador.
But that journey wasn’t just about the numbers and titles. The true reward was the personal growth and opportunity that came with it. I learned to believe in my abilities as a content creator and confidently share my stories and experiences with others. This opened doors to collaborate with a few companies and startups, leveraging my unique combination of technical background and storytelling skills.
Now, I have a newsletter called “TechForge” on Substack, and I’m currently working on reaching a broader loyal audience and having more presence as a speaker at conferences.
However, I knew that to achieve that, I needed to continue to produce and share valuable content. That’s why, inspired by my love for breaking down complex ideas and making them accessible to all, I recently embarked on a new venture: Ink Mastery.

It’s a publication that delves deep into the world of writing, uncovering the styles and techniques of the best writers on Medium and beyond.

Final Thought
Building a personal brand as a content creator can be a daunting task, especially when you’re starting out. It requires a combination of several factors, including authenticity, consistency, and a passion for sharing knowledge and connecting with others.
But trust me, it’s worth it. I’ve been on this transformative journey for a while now, and I am grateful for it.
So if you’re thinking about crafting your voice and building your own personal brand, my advice is simple: just start.
And remember the following key elements;
- Be true to yourself and share your unique perspective and experiences.
- Be open to learning from and connecting with others.
- Embrace your strengths and weaknesses: I learned to celebrate my unique qualities as an introvert and my background as a shy person. I also embraced my passion for dabbling in different subjects and it has been one of the best decisions I made. By embracing what makes you different, you can stand out in the crowd and make a real impact with your content.
- Be consistent in your output: It may take time, but with persistence and hard work, you can establish your personal brand and connect with a larger audience.
- Be ready to step out of your comfort zone and take risks. This might mean trying new content formats, such as video or podcasting, or sharing more personal stories. But it also means being open to feedback and criticism and using it to improve and grow as a content creator.
This journey isn’t going to be easy, but it’s going to be worth it.
