My Stats Have Finally Plummeted
It was bound to happen sooner or later
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been reading about how a lot of Medium writers have seen a drastic drop in their statistics — from views to reads and even to their earnings. It seems that whatever it is that Medium changed, it has really affected writers all over.
The thing is, I wasn’t one of them. My views, reads and earnings were still consistently the same as the previous months. It’s been a month plus since I started seeing writers complain about the drop in their stats but I seemed to have been spared from it.
Until now.
Over the last couple of days, my stats have plummeted quite a bit. Where I’ve been averaging between 200–300 reads a day, it’s gone down to below 100 now. 200–300 reads a day may not seem like a lot to some of you but it’s these number of reads that have helped me to hit over $90 in the last couple of months and given me hope of getting back into the $100-a-month club.
Given that it’s now the last day of the month and I’ve already made over $90, I won’t have to worry so much about my earnings dropping for this month.
However, if my stats continue to be this low in the coming month, I would start to wonder about how much I’ll make by the end of the year.
I guess when I read that even the big writers were being hit like this, it was bound to happen to me as well sooner or later. Medium has made quite a number of changes over the years and the latest changes they made must be behind the reason why stats are just dropping like flies.
But I can’t help but wonder if there are other reasons for it?
News Break
If you haven’t already heard about it, there’s a new kid on the block and a serious competitor to Medium.
It’s called News Break.
Recently, a lot of Medium writers have tried to sign up to News Break’s own content creator programme (yours truly being one of them but still haven’t heard back from them about it yet) as apparently it’s much easier to make good money over there as compared to over here.
At the moment, none of the writers (that I know of at least) has got paid by News Break yet but once they do and if it’s true, we’ll probably see more and more writers trying their luck over there.
I’m now wondering is that one of the reasons why the stats on Medium have been dropping too? Is it because that it’s not only writers that are checking it out but maybe readers as well?
I guess time will only tell.
Medium moving away from clickbait articles
Medium has always said they won’t curate clickbait articles but that didn’t stop writers from writing clickbait articles because let’s face it — it works.
Clickbait articles are what brings in the crowd.
There are plenty of clickbait articles that used to gain hundreds of thousands of views and reads. But Medium is moving away from those articles now by not featuring articles deemed as clickbait across their pages. So, chances are that if you write an article that Medium deems as clickbait, it may not gain much traction.
This could well be one of the reasons why stats have started to drop a lot more as well for a lot of writers.
I don't claim to write clickbait articles often but I guess I do every now and then (but with substantial content as well) so maybe it’s time to change my strategies a little bit.
In the last 2 years that I’ve been on Medium, I’ve seen changes happen ever so often and it’s just the sign of times. You have to change to adapt to what’s happening all around you.
Medium’s the same as well. They have to move with the times. That’s just how things are and what you have to do if you want to stay relevant.
As writers, we just have to adapt whenever Medium changes something.
It’s not to say that we can’t voice out of opinions because we have seen Medium respond when there are overwhelming support or voices to a specific change that they have made and if this particular change doesn’t sit well with writers and we make it known, they will have to listen and make changes to appease their number one source of content creators.
After all, with a new competitor in the picture, Medium can’t afford to slack off and lose writers in droves.
So, let’s see what happens in the next couple of weeks/months. But one thing’s for sure, I won’t just sit back and let my stats drop. I’m going to see what I can do to adapt and hit the ground running again.
