My Soul Rants with Gurpreet Dhariwal

“Without darkness, I wouldn’t have known the worth of light in my life.”

Hi Gurpreet , Thanks so much for doing this interview. I’m glad we connected on Medium, thanks to Martine Weber and I’m looking forward to interviewing you today. You are able to evoke so many emotions and insight with your poetry. I’m particularly curious about your book, My Soul Rants.

Can you tell me a little bit about the book, ‘My Soul Rants’?

‘My Soul Rants’ is my first poetry book which includes poetry from the days when I was 16 years old. Some of the poems have been added from the last year too but it majorly has poems when I was growing up as a spectator to observe everything more keenly and deeply. It has all sorts of emotions from love, hope, relations, life to death, and heartbreaks too.

What inspired this book?

I have been writing since I was 16 years old and always got published in various anthologies and eBooks as a guest poetess. I wanted to come up with something of my own so I started consolidating the poems last year. By now, I have written more than 250 poems and I picked the best ones for ‘My Soul Rants’. That inspiration has always been within to be a published author and with ‘My Soul Rants’, the dream has finally come true. I am working on more books at present.

Who did you write this book for?

I have written this book for all the miserable souls seeking peace in this cunning world. May they find comfort in my words.

If your soul could speak, what would it say?

My soul would expect people to accept others for who they are, removing all the veils of cunningness, and living life without any fear and remorse. My soul would speak more about accepting yourself with all the love in heart than expecting others to do that sort of favor to you. My soul would say if the world had no miseries, we wouldn’t have known what does happiness taste like?

If your soul could sing, what would it sing?

My soul sings all the time jingles for the people who have been through the worse, yet they see dreams and make efforts to achieve them. My soul sings for myself as I have been through a lot and I never give up. My soul sings let it be and let it all go with all your heart.

What is your soul’s purpose?

I want to uplift as many as people possible in whatever capacity I could.

What is your soul’s biggest rant :)?

Understanding the darkness within me and letting the darkness know I accept you and without you, I wouldn’t have known the worth of the light in my life.

What was your soul’s most challenging experience?

In 2017, when my marriage fell apart and I decided to fight my case against a domestic violence abuser. That’s the most courageous decision I have ever made in my life and it was a challenge for me because I was in depression and didn’t know how to fight back.

With a little bit of strength and courage in my thoughts, I took the charge of my life in my hands and never looked back again.

What can you say about darkness and light?

Understanding the darkness within me and letting the darkness know I accept you and without you, I wouldn’t have known the worth of the light in my life.

What can you say about your heart’s wounds?

My heart has been broken so many times and last time it was broken, I learned to mend it easily because by now I know the art of mending a broken heart. My wound may not be visible now as it has been on the healing process for long.

Which of your poems speak to you most?

I love all my poems but especially the ones which I have written with no title in the book speaks the most to me. Those are raw, rare, and real.

When did you begin your soul journey?

At a very early age when I was growing up because I have seen domestic violence back at home too. My experiences were cruel but then life was teaching something grateful to me every day. I learned to thank god for giving me the life in which I did learn so many things and without setbacks, I wouldn’t have been what I am now.

When did you start writing?

I have been writing since I was 16 years old. I started as a blogger, then turned a poet in 2008 and now I write about everything under the skin of the sky.

What is your soul’s message?

My soul message is to be kind to yourself first and you will learn about how to be kind to others.

Any thoughts on soulmates :)?

Yeah, I believe in the concept of soulmates and sometimes they don’t exist in lovers only. They exist in best friends too. No matter how far they go, you always find yourself connected to them.

Inspiring answers, Gurpreet. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about your book and yourself. How can people connect with you?
