My Sister’s Rise From Mental Torment to Refuge Deputy Manager
She Fled a Nightmare. Now She Runs a Refuge!
I just had to share this incredible story about my sister! With her blessing, of course. You might remember how she moved in with me after escaping a truly awful, abusive relationship? I posted about it some time ago. It was a tough time, she was barely even a shadow of her true self.
Fast forward, she started therapy (CBT, a lifesaver!) and found a safe haven at a women’s Refuge. Here’s the amazing twist! For the past few weeks, she wasn’t just staying there, she’s been volunteering!
She lost her old job at the doctor’s surgery as her narcissistic boyfriend rendered her completely incapable? She practically ran the place before he arrived on the scene?
Well, those skills haven’t vanished. She’s been putting them to the best use ever at the refuge, tackling everything from admin to budgeting.
The staff noticed! To say they were Impressed by her dedication and talent would be an understatement, they offered her a furnished bungalow on-site rent-free! and a brand-new position as Deputy Manager! Apparently, the current deputy manager is retiring in six months, and they see my sister as the perfect replacement.
Incredible, right? From needing support to becoming a leader, all in just a few weeks of being there. She’s been having therapy for a few months now, and she’ll continue for as long as is needed.
There’s more. The abuse even made her afraid to drive. But the refuge, as part of this amazing offer, is providing her with a car once she’s fully recovered. Talk about empowering someone! They are such a lovely family-run team too. It’s just amazing! ❤️😍❤️
Honestly, the most inspiring part is how much this work is helping her heal. Her therapist and I are speechless.
She’s become this confident, radiant woman, miles ahead of where she was just months ago. She’s started to smile properly again, with her little creases showing on her cheeks, it totally melts me.
She’s still nervous and a bit closed off, but she’s starting to experience life again, and accepting that good things do happen.
I think this is a really powerful reminder of human resilience. My sister’s journey proves that even in the darkest times, you can find not just safety, but purpose, growth, and a chance to truly shine.
I cried my eyes out when she came for dinner the other day and told be all this. I’m so proud of her, she’s such a beautiful and amazing person.
I hope you enjoyed reading this. I should start posting more frequently now I don’t have to worry so much.
