My Radical Philosophy of “Claps” on Medium

My Evolutionary Claps Practice

Before & After Esoteric Claps

Like many of my novice Medium comrades, I began clapping just x1. I actually didn’t know I could clap more than once. When I began writing for my first publication Know Thyself Heal Thyself in March of 2021, many people clapped up to 50 times. Wow, I thought. I had some rigid clapping practices based on the Law of Three. Three as in:

3, 6, 9, or 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30, 33, 36, 42, 45, 48… and variations in the lands of multiples of 3 and an occasional 19 — the red herring.

There’s a story about 19 — but it may only be interesting to those that follow the Tarot. One guy I met explained his esoteric claps numbers to me. He has of late taken a break from Medium. I expect he will be back with a fantastical journey and stories about it one day. I used to have criteria for claps after I got over the 1 clap rigid rule I had in the beginning.

The Criteria were: 1. Crisp prose. 2. A good grasp of the subject matter. 3. Did they have familiarity with their subject matter? 4. Or were they reporting on existing knowledge bases?

I don’t set rigid rules any longer. I threw them out the window.

The Medium Intent

From what I read about Medium from the staff: it is a platform for readers and writers. And a social media platform that offers a climate where we can support one another. Writers and readers unite! As a writer, I am also a reader. There are some readers who are either not yet writers or are only readers — the purest gems in a sea of words. In other words, I honor readers that choose not to write and readers that do write too.

That was a big Hazah! An Ah-Ha moment! And everything changed.

Now, I usually clap 50 times for writers. This is based on offering support and encouragement for their piece and their brand. At times I wish I could clap more. My understanding is that Medium is a supportive environment for writers and readers. I am 100% supportive of that mindset, heartset, bodyset, and soulset.

My basic criteria for clapping 50 times are:

Are they enthusiastic about the subject matter?

If yes — 50 claps.

Everything else is gravy. That includes: sensuous words they have written that sound wonderful when read aloud, a topic I am passionate about, hunger to know more… are all very exciting to me.

If I’ve received adequate sleep, I make comments filled with praise. Or I may ask a question… Or I may offer experience along the same lines.

Apologies

Since I have been working and/or surrendering to a full night’s sleep. Meaning my sleep varies from 3 to 7 hours per night (lately 4-5). This is one reason why I don’t read as many of your stories as I’d like. Or comment on the wonderful highlights and comments you have made to my stories. I do read them and I clap for them.

Please accept my apologies.
