I’d never imagined my poem could be worth something
Why I write poetry in English

I love writing, but I had forgotten about that for a long time until I started writing online in 2014. I launched my first blog a year later. Since then, I blogged about my life in Canada, learning languages, gardening, healthy food and so on. I wrote everything I could write on my blogs.
As I connected to more and more writers through social media or other platforms I remembered that I used to want to be a writer when I was in my twenties. I wrote a few stories and essays when I was a student, which I lost afterwards. I used to dream to be a writer, but I completely forgot about that dream.
Now I am a fulltime writer and my dream came back to me. I started creative writing such as essays, short stories, fictions in Japanese which is my mother tongue. However, making a living by creative writing is not easy, at least for me, it seems to be less easy than making money through blogging.
At the same time I started creative writing in Japanese, I started blogging in English. Writing in a non-native language is not easy at all, but I wanted to try because I had some stories to tell to non-native speakers of Japanese. And then I bumped into Medium where lots of English writers are writing creative pieces. I was motivated to write something in English apart from blogs. At first when I began to write on Medium I wrote articles similar to blog posts (like I am writing now) and then I commenced writing poetry after I had read a few poems written by other writers.
I hadn’t written much poetry even in Japanese before, but now I like writing it both in English and Japanese. When you write poetry, you don’t need too many words, so you can focus more on every single word.
I didn’t have any idea about writing poetry in any language, but here, I’ve got some readers who liked some of my poetry, which is great. I had never ever imagined that my little poems online could be read by somebody else.
I also think that writing poetry is a good approach to learning how to write in non-native languages. It’s like a thrilling game with your readers. You use as few words as possible and then see how they receive your message.
